Plantation history and contemporary Business of Tea
The plantation history and contemporary business of tea
The production and growing of tea on a commercial level is a very large industry,
with a large number of plantations and consumers of tea. Sarah Besky’s book,
“The Darjeeling distinction” does a very good job of truly showing the reading
how the modern tea plantation works. While reading the book you can quickly
notice that Besky really focuses on the quality of life of the plantation workers,
and the terroir of the tea grown from these plantations. Some people argue that
terroir even exists in tea, or if it is just a genius way to market the product
produced from these plantations. While doing a variety of tea tastings of a wide
variety of teas from different regions of the world and you can definitely taste
the difference in tea flavor. What was weird was that some of the teas from
different regions tastes almost exactly the same. Which is why some people
could argue that terrior is just a marketing scheme.
