PORTLAND, Ore. – Nearing the end of an unprecedented season that has seen six school records broken, many times more than once, six Evergreen student-athletes have been honored for their achievements outside of the athletic arena and in the classroom, being named Academic All-Cascade Collegiate Conference.
A pair of Evergreen men’s track and field athletes have earned honors as both Connor Abdelnoor (Singapore/Singapore American School) and Jay Bolton (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) earned honors. Abdelnoor, majoring in communications, set a new top mark in the 400m hurdles during the first meet of the year and posted a CCC-qualifying mark in both the 110m and 400m hurdles. Bolton, a computer science major, is competing in track and field for the first time as a collegiate athlete and has thrown both the shot put and discus for the Geoducks in 2011.
Four Evergreen women earned honors, led by junior photography major Karissa Carlson (Pateros, Wash./Pateros HS), who has already posted an NAIA B-Cut in the 800m run and has been busy rewriting the school record books in both the 800m and 1500m runs. Junior Evelyn Coleman (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS) has been a quick study for the Geoducks after joining the team as a freshman with no high school experience. Coleman, studying environmental science, holds the school record in the 100m high hurdles as she continues to get faster.
American studies major Britta Peterson (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS) also earned academic honors, having represented the Geoducks in all three of the distance races. The final honoree for Evergreen was sophomore pole vaulter and political science student Meaghan Tomasiewicz (Monroe, Wis./Monroe HS), who bettered her own school record with a vault of 2.90m at the Lewis & Clark Invitational.
To earn recognition as a CCC scholar-athlete, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and be of sophomore academic standing. The Geoducks are proud of these six student-athletes for going above and beyond, both in academics and athletically.
