Soon-To-Be Coastline

The impending consequences of climate change seem to pass by relatively unknown to the general population. Many that are aware do what they can to bring more attention to the subject, prepare, and help in some way or another. Some people just give up, and lose faith in our ability to restore the planet to a healthy state. Honestly, who can blame them? A scale this grand can make things seem hopeless, but if we don’t do anything to help then nothing will get better. Recognizing the topic of climate change, the women working at the front counter of their antique shop joked about how they were glad their lease was ending soon, after I mentioned rising sea level pushing the coastline into the city. When the sea level rises one meter, Olympia Glass Co. and the other shops on the block will not notice the difference. After rising four meters, the sea covers ninety percent of my site of study, this random block near the bay. What will people do without Olympia Coffee Roasting Co., pizza, or peacock antiques? My belief is that it is the business owners that will be affected greatest by the rising tide. Customers can look elsewhere for the same goods but it is a costly ordeal to re-set up shop somewhere else, especially after losing your building to the elements without reimbursement.
