The Capitol Lake Dam Birds

A mallard duck takes a break by himself on the ledge surrounding half the Capitol Lake.

At the water's edge, the Great Blue Heron seems startled by my presence, ever vigilant, ready to take flight.

Besides the joggers, another common visitor to the Capitol Lake Dam area is the varieties of birds. The Great Blue Heron can be seen stalking its prey at the water’s edge. The Heron even hunts from below the dam, a refuge from intruders and gusty winds. Waterfowl are also frequently present at the dam’s edge. I am still in awe at the iridescent green on a mallard’s head. It was quite difficult for me to even catch the green let alone the way the color presented to my eye. The photo does the duck no justice. I plan on improving my camera-setting selection skills in order to obtain a more vibrant picture.

    Heh, those dam birds.

The picture you chose for the featured image really caught my attention on this post. It’s so vibrant and mysterious, and I personally think it’s a great example of contrast usage! But I really wanted to see it more closely… It might be interesting if you changed the format of the post from “Standard” to “Image”?

Your writing is eloquent and I can hear your voice come through when I read it. Also very excited about your precise field notes/observations… My inner Anne really wants to see the picture of it from your field notes, because the addition of your handwriting would absolutely enhance the character of this post. Excellent work.
