“Past” Post Overview

In addition to posts related to your ongoing inquiry into the present natural and cultural features of the Olympia site you are studying throughout the quarter, you will craft one or more coherent and readable posts about its past in order to provide context for what you observe today and predict for tomorrow.

Using the Sandburg overlays, Olympia Historical Society records, the Secretary of State Archive of maps, and other resources you find, you will provide historical context for the site you are studying. You will:

  • Craft a brief introductory paragraph framing the natural and cultural history of your site.
  • Include your historical waterline map.
  • Summarize past land use.
  • Provide a timeline of development using narrative and (if you like) sketches.
  • Revise and combine text & sketches from field notes to provide a sense of place that reflects the natural, cultural and built environment.
  • Include historical images w/ citations and/or photo credits.
  • Embed hypertext links to resources the you used and/or which provide additional relevant information about your site’s history.
  • Choose a “featured image.”
  • Select the correct post category: “Olympia Past.”
  • Locate posts on GeoMashup.
  • Tag your post with relevant key words.
