OLYMPIA, Wash. – Hitting .407 for the match, the sixth-ranked College of Idaho Coyotes flew past the Evergreen Geoducks, picking up a straight-set victory in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Friday evening at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
In the first set, the ‘Yotes (17-1, 12-0 CCC) picked up the first two points and never trailed as the Geoducks (0-12, 0-11 CCC) struggled to keep up. The closest that Evergreen would get would be 9-7 but College of Idaho quickly stormed ahead, finishing the frame on a 16-1 run to take the early lead. The Coyotes hit .625 in the first set, putting down 16 kills with just one error in 24 attacks.
In the second set, the Geoducks came ready to play as a College of Idaho gave them the 1-0 lead. Evergreen kept it close through much of the set, even holding a 15-13 lead before a 12-3 run gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the match. The score was tied 13 times in the second frame as the squads traded leads five times.
The third set was much like the first as the ‘Yotes overpowered the Geoducks. Evergreen managed to keep it tight early, trailing by just two at 6-4 but C of I went on a 15-2 run to go ahead 21-6 and it just took a few more kills to collect the straight set victory.
Evergreen was led by seven kills from Jasmine Horton (Seattle, Wash./Foster HS) as the Geoducks managed just nine total kills on the night. Sophomore Erin Mitchell (Santa Cruz, Calif./Mt. Madonna School) assisted on all nine kills and also added a service ace on the night.
College of Idaho was led by 12 kills from Danielle Montalbo. Kelsey Soos put up 33 assists on the night while Whitney Brigham dug out 17 balls in the match. The ‘Yotes hit .407 on the night, putting down 47 kills with 12 attack errors on 86 total attempts.
The Geoducks will wrap up their five-match homestand on Saturday afternoon when they host Eastern Oregon, beginning at 3:00 pm. College of Idaho will be in action on Saturday as well, traveling to Northwest for a match set to begin at 7:00 pm.
