Olympia, Wash.– Saint Martin’s University recorded 16 steals and forced 33 turnovers in an 88-46 exhibition victory Tuesday night over The Evergreen State College in the CRC Gymnasium. As a team, the Geoducks shot just 14-39 while the Saints made more than half of their shots going 31-59 from the field.

The Saints’ Marelle Moehrle (Lynwood, Wash. /Meadowdale HS) led all scorers with 18 points and shot 6-7 from the three point arc.

Evergreen shot just 7-20 from the field in the first half and went to the locker room trailing 37-20 at the half. SMU started the second half with a 20-8 run and kept rolling from there as they continued to give the Geoduck offense fits. Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash. / La Sierra University), 2010 Cascade Conference Newcomer of the year, fouled out with over 11 minutes to go in the game which made things a little more difficult for Evergreen. The Saints outscored the Geoducks 51-26 as they concluded their preseason schedule at the Greenhouse.

Evergreen red-shirt freshman Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash. / Black Hills HS) had eight points and nine rebounds in her first home game as a Geoduck, while going 3-5 from the field. Junior transfer Vanessa Caskey (Tacoma, Wash. / Pierce College) added eight more points and three rebounds. Sophomore Shekia Hill (Steilacoom, Wash. / Steirlacoom HS) posted eight points of her own with two rebounds and an assist. “We have to get better,” head coach Monica Heuer said after the game.

The Geoducks face Lewis and Clark College of Portland next Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Greenhouse.
