Pioneers sink seven three-pointers to upend Geoducks by seventeen points

OLYMPIA, Wash.—The Evergreen State Geoducks lost their third game of the season to the Lewis and Clark Pioneers 68-51 Tuesday night in the Geoducks first official home game of the season at the CRC Gymnasium. After losing two tough games at the Carroll College Tournament, the Geoducks (0-3) were poised to send the Pioneers (0-0) home with a loss.

Evergreen rallied back early from a 16-8 deficit to take a 20-19 lead with just over eight minutes to go in the first half. Tayler Wang (Kamuela, Hawaii / Hawaii Prep. HS) gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the first half at 30-20 with a clutch 3-pointers, and Lewis and Clark only seemed to gain momentum after that. Lewis and Clark increased their lead by as much as 21 before the final score showed a 17 point margin at the end of the game. The Pioneer’s Kristina Williams (El Dorado Hills, Cali. / Oakridge HS) scored a team high of 13 points while playing just 19 minutes of the match-up. Lewis and Clark shot 7-18 in the win.

Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash. / LaSierra University) was Evergreen’s bright spot of the game, rebounding well from an off night against Saint Martin’s a week ago. Woods scored just eight points in that contest and fouled out with over 11 minutes to go in the game. The senior guard led all scorers with 15 points and added eight rebounds and four assists. Defensively, Woods had five steals and a block. Latifa Ward’s (Tacoma, Wash. / Foss HS) strong defensive presence was complimented by her nine points and nine rebounds as she was able to go 75 percent from the free-throw stripe. Sophomore guard Shekia Hill (Steilacoom, Wash. / Steilacoom HS) also had nine points while adding five rebounds in the Geoduck’s home loss.

Head coach Monica Heuer, visibly frustrated by the loss, responded by saying, “it’s sad to see a team play for 20 minutes and can’t sustain.” “We did it for 20 [minutes] and didn’t keep it up,” Heuer also added that she has been shorthanded all season. The Geoducks have been battling the injury bug this season and did not have their starting post player Danielle Swain (Ranier, Wash. / Black Hills HS) for tonight’s game due to an injured shoulder.

The Geoduck’s host Pacific University this Saturday at the CRC Gymnasium at 6:00pm and look to end their week with a win at home before conference play begins next month.
