SALEM, Ore.  –  With both teams struggling a bit from the field and the rebounding margin pretty even, it was turnovers that decided the game as the Evergreen Geoducks fell to the Corban Warriors, 63-51, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night in Salem, Ore.

In the first half, Corban (12-9, 7-4 CCC) took the initial lead on a three-pointer just 13 seconds in but Evergreen (4-14, 2-9 CCC) answered right back with a two-point basket by Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash./La Sierra Univ.).  The Warriors maintained the lead for the entire period but the visiting Geoducks kept it close, staying within five points at halftime, 24-19.  Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with both squads shooting around 25% for the half.

The Geoducks tied things up with 15:45 left to play after Woods hit a three to tie the game at 30.  After a quick Corban turnover, Evergreen took its first lead of the game just 30 second later as Vanessa Caskey (Tacoma, Wash./Pierce CC) hit a jumper off a Woods assist.  Corban tied the game up shortly after and a pair of free throws gave the Warriors back the lead with 14 minutes left to go.

Corban continued to crawl ahead as the game progressed but Evergreen continued to play hard, keeping the game close.  The lead hit double-digits with 2:41 left to play and the Warriors hit free throws down the stretch as they collected the 63-51 win.

Evergreen was led by 22 points and nine rebounds from freshman phenom Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS).  Latrina Woods added 11 points in the loss.  The Geoducks improved their shooting in the second half, making 41.4% of their attempts in the final 20 minutes.

Corban was led by 13 points from Katie Steigleman, the only Warrior in double-digits.  The Warriors made 18 of 31 attempts from the charity stripe and forced 23 Evergreen turnovers in the win.

The Geoducks will have a light week next week as their lone game will be up the I-5 corridor when they head up to Kirkland to take on Northwest University on Friday night.
