Evergreen wins second straight at home
OLYMPIA, Wash. – A solid effort across the board led the Evergreen Geoducks to a second straight win at home as the green and white collected a 72-53 win over the Oregon Tech Owls in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game on Friday night in Olympia, Wash.
The game got off to an auspicious start for the visiting Owls (10-16, 2-12 CCC) as Oregon Tech was awarded two free throws before the opening tip due to an incorrect jersey number for the Geoducks (5-15, 3-10 CCC) in the official scorebook. OIT converted on both but struggled once the clock began to tick as the Owls didn’t hit their first field goal until the 13:41 mark as Evergreen held the early lead.
The game stayed close midway through as the Geoducks held a three-point lead with 9:07 left to play. That is, until an 18-2 run but the Geoducks back up by double-digits as Oregon Tech went ice cold from the field, going over six minutes between points to give Evergreen the 39-23 halftime lead.
The Owls managed to get the difference in score down to 11 midway through the period but Evergreen continued to hit shots as the Geoducks maintained the double-digit lead. OIT got the Evergreen lead back into single digits with a pair of free throws with 8:09 left to play. The Geoducks stepped up over the final minutes of the game to hold off the feisty Owls and collect to 72-53 win to run their home win streak to two straight.
Evergreen was led by 21 points and 10 rebounds from junior Vanessa Caskey (Tacoma, Wash./Pierce CC). Senior Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash./La Sierra Univ.) and freshman Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS) each added 12 points while Swain also brought down a game-high 17 rebounds to collect the double-double. Senior Cambria Smith (Anaheim, Calif./La Sierra Univ.) played well after getting the start, posting 10 points and six rebounds in the win.
Oregon Tech was led by 12 points from Kassie Conditt and 10 points from Morgan Hofman. The visiting Owls struggled from the field, making just 29.41% of their attempts and just 10 of 36 from inside the arc.
The Geoducks will be at home again on Saturday night when they play host to Southern Oregon in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game. Tip-off with the Raiders is set for 5:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
