PORTLAND, Ore.  – The Evergreen Geoducks put together a strong 30 minutes but it was the Warner Pacific Knights who controlled the final 10 minutes as the host Knights collected a 64-51 win in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game on Friday night at CC Perry Gymnasium in Portland, Ore.

In the opening half, the teams stayed close early but the host Knights (14-11, 8-7 CCC) built their biggest lead of the period midway through, 17-11.  A 16-4 run by Evergreen (5-17, 3-12 CCC) put the Geoducks in control late as they took a six-point lead of their own with just over two minutes to play.  WPC hit a quartet of free throws to close out the period but Evergreen still held the halftime lead, 27-25.

In the second period, the Geoducks came out of the locker room ready to play, opening the period with a 10-4 run over the first five minutes to extend the lead to eight.  The Knights chipped away, using a 10-2 run to pull within one point with 11:29 left to play.  WPC took the lead with 8:26 left to play, using a jumper by Kelsey Mattsen to pull ahead by one.

Warner Pacific continued to extend the lead, building the lead back up to six with 5:35 left on the clock and then hitting double-digits with 4:21 left to play, 54-44.  The Geoducks tried desperately to warm up in time to get back into the game but it was too little, too late as the Knights picked up the 64-51 win.

Evergreen was led by 10 points each from Vanessa Caskey (Tacoma, Wash./Pierce CC) and LaTrina Woods (Skyway, Wash./LaSierra University).  The Geoducks shot 38.5% for the night but were outrebounded, 42-30 as they took the loss.

Warner Pacific was led by 20 points from Kelsey Mattsen, who played 39 of 40 minutes for the Knights.  Katie Smith added 14 points and Layne Tucker added 11 in the win.  The Knights made 18-of-19 free throws for 94.7% from the charity stripe.

The Geoducks will wrap up the road portion of the 2010-11 schedule on Saturday night when they head to Concordia University.  Tip-off with the Cavaliers is set for 5:30 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
