OLYMPIA, Wash. – A 21-2 first-half run by ninth-ranked Eastern Oregon gave the Mountaineers enough cushion to summit past the Evergreen Geoducks, 82-51, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
The Geoducks (3-10, 1-3 CCC) took the early lead, holding a 13-12 advantage with 12:28 left to go in the first half but the Mounties (11-3, 4-1 CCC) scored nine unanswered during the large run that left EOU up 33-15 with 3:42 left on the clock. Eastern continued to build the lead as the teams went into halftime with EOU up 43-23.
The lead stayed into the 20s for most of the second half before Eastern Oregon began to wear down the Geoducks. The Mounties lead crept into the 30s on a basket by Nyesha Joseph with 5:29 left to play in the game as Eastern cruised to the 82-51 win.
Evergreen was led by 19 points from sophomore Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS), also adding eight rebounds in the losing effort. The Geoducks turned the ball over 32 teams, allowing EOU to score 40 points following Evergreen giveaways.
Eastern Oregon was led by 13 points off the bench from Korrie Bourn. Kyle Miller chipped in 12 points for the balanced Mountaineer attack while Jorie Freeman led the team with six rebounds on the night. EOU had 43 points off the bench, compared with just five for host Evergreen.
The Geoducks will wrap up 2011 on Friday night when they play host to College of Idaho. Tip with the Coyotes is set for 5:30 pm at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia.
