LACEY, Wash. – A cold-shooting first half was too much for the Evergreen Geoducks to overcome as they fell to cross-town rival Saint Martin’s, 54-38, in an exhibition women’s basketball game on Tuesday night at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey, Wash.
In the first half, Evergreen struggled to find their shot, as they made just four-of-32 shots for 12.5% as they found themselves down early. With the score at 13-8 with 9:16 left to play, the Geoducks went cold, managing just three points the rest of the period as Saint Martin’s took a 25-11 lead into the break.
Evergreen warmed up a bit more in the second half, managing 30.3% shooting in the final 20 minutes but the Saints improved as well, shooting at a 44.4% clip in the second period. The SMU lead hit 20 with 15:16 left to play but Evergreen was able to chip the difference back into the teen before falling 54-38.
Evergreen was led by 14 points and nine rebounds from Jessica Edge (Lake Stevens, Wash./Skagit Valley CC). Sophomore Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills) picked up the double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. The Geoducks outrebounded the Saints, 52-40, on the game but couldn’t quite get it done from the field.
Saint Martin’s was led by 10 points each from forwards Megan Teade and Chelsea Haskey. Haskey also picked up 13 rebounds to lead the Saints, who finished the game shooting 40.7% from the field, including 23.1% from behind the three-point arc.
The Geoducks will resume the counting portion of their schedule next Tuesday when they travel to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark. Tip-off with the Pioneers is set for 6:00 pm.
