I’m the first to admit I’m not a huge football fan. I don’t tend to follow any teams, and most of my football watching happens on weekends when I’m visiting my parents. However, it’s hard not to pay attention to the media as it highlights the protests going on by players when it comes to kneeling for the National Anthem. They have been met with mixed reviews. There are those who have no problem with peaceful protest, and others who believe that not standing for the anthem is an attack against the U.S. military. I tend to side with those trying to bring light to the racial inequality in America, and like to think that our soldiers fought to allow each citizen to have their own individual voice.

That being said, Stephen Curry recently published a short article in The Player’s Tribune called “The Noise.” In the article, Curry talks about using his platform as an athlete to give a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard. He also talks about a real-life run in he had with a veteran who brought Curry’s attention to the fact that there are plenty of veterans who deal with the same problems regarding access to medical attention, homelessness, and  racial inequality.

Overall, I think the article is worth a read. It’s always interesting to view the perspective of someone who is in the middle of a situation, and certainly Curry has received some backlash from the general public, including the president. I personally enjoy seeing people using their platform and fame to bring awareness to those in need.

Note: This may be a bit tangential, but I felt it was appropriate given that Veteran’s Day was yesterday.
