There’s something about growing up in a family of musicians. Playing an instrument was never an option, it was an expectation. There was a key point in my childhood when I waked into my kitchen and my mom sat me down and looked at me. “You can join band, orchestra or choir.” That was it, the pivotal moment. I accepted my destiny as a band geek, and my parents bought me my first trombone. Ten years and a great few groups later I still play in a small community jazz band in my home town. This quarter I’m interested in exploring Asian American crosscurrents within the realm of jazz music. I hope to learn more about the ways in which Asian American culture expands and influences the world of jazz.
