I was watching some book hauls on Youtube and there was a book titled, Crazy Rich Asians. All about a young rich Chinese man from a rich Chinese family who brings his fiance to meet the family. The fiance is also Chinese, but was born in America. If this book had been on our class reading list, I think a focused subject would be the idea of classism on whether you are a pure Chinese by being born in China or if being American affects your cultural side. Then there is the question of what creates Chinese culture? The Chinese family or the country itself? We are heading to the last week of the course and even though this book wasn’t on the list, being in this course has opened my story horizons open to being interested in this type of story. I wonder why I wasn’t interested before in reading about “coming of age.” I was more interested in fantasy, getting out of my head and even farther into another world.
