Roland Brace Leads Geoducks Past Beacons, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Jeff Roland (Tacoma, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) scored twice and Mirza Memic (Bellevue, Wash./Whatcom CC) added a goal and an assist as the Evergreen Geoducks collected a 3-0 win over the Northwest Christian Beacons in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Wednesday evening at Mike Kelly Field in Springfield, Ore.

The Geoducks (8-5-0, 8-2-0 CCC) took the lead in the 36th minute as Memic got past a Northwest Christian (3-9-2, 1-7-2 CCC) defender before putting the ball past Erik Carrazco for the score.  Evergreen held an 8-4 advantage on shots in the first half as they took the 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, senior Kevin Flavin (Oak Harbor, Wash./Shoreline CC) sent in a cross to the front of the goal in the 59th minute and Roland picked up his first goal of the night, firing it past Carrazco.  Just a few minutes later, Roland did it again, this time on the assist by Memic, as the Geoducks earned the 3-0 win.

Despite 10 Northwest Christian shots on the night, the duo of Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC)  and Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) didn’t have to do much to earn the clean sheet as no Beacon shots found the frame.

The win also sets a new season high for head coach John Purtteman, who earns his 68th career win and 35th career conference win with the shutout.  The Geoducks sit just one win back of their previous record for conference wins of nine, reached most recently in 2005.

Evergreen will go for win number nine on Saturday afternoon when they take on Corban, beginning at 3pm at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore.

Swain Named Preseason All-Cascade Conference

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After being just one of two underclassmen named to the 2011-12 Cascade Conference All-Conference team, junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS)  has been named to the CCC Preseason All-Conference team for 2012-13 year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

Swain finished her sophomore season ranked third in the Cascade Conference in scoring at 15.0 ppg and in rebounding at 9.6 rpg.  She was also fourth in the conference in blocks with a school-record 49 and her 3.39 offensive rebounds per game ranked her third in the CCC as well.  She was also a preseason All-CCC selection as a sophomore after earning Honorable Mention All-CCC honors as a freshman.

Senior guard Felicity Jones of College of Idaho was named Preseason Player of the Year.  Defending champion Corban led the way with three players named.  Nine of 10 schools were represented on the team, with Concordia being the lone school without a player named.

The men’s preseason all-conference team was named as well with Southern Oregon’s Eric Thompson being named preseason player of the year.

Swain and the Geoduck women open the 2012-13 season with an exhibition on Nov. 13 at home against Saint Martin’s.  Evergreen will then open up the season in earnest on Nov. 17 at Puget Sound.

Geoducks Picked 9th, 10th in Preseason CCC Hoops Polls

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Evergreen Geoducks are predicted to finish at the bottom of the conference standings this season if the Cascade Conference coaches poll rings true.  The Geoduck women are predicted to finish ninth in the preseason poll while the men are prognosticated at 10th in their respective poll.

The Geoduck women, who finished tied for seventh last season while earning a spot in the 2012 Cascade Conference tournament, earned 23 points to take ninth in the preseason poll, despite returning four of five starters in 2012-13.  Evergreen will be led by All-CCC forward Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS), who was second in the conference in scoring (15.0 ppg) and third in rebounding (9.6 rpg).

Eastern Oregon is predicted to win the women’s title, earning nine of 10 first-place votes for 99 points.  Corban was picked second, followed by College of Idaho, Warner Pacific, Oregon Tech, Southern Oregon, Northwest Christian, Concordia, Evergreen and Northwest.

On the men’s side, Evergreen has nowhere to go but up as the Geoducks were picked 10th in the preseason poll after going winless in conference play last season.  Evergreen returns forwards Elzie Dickens III (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) and Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) from a year ago but the rest of the roster will look brand new as the green and white look to surprise some teams on their way up the conference standings.

Defending NAIA national champion Oregon Tech has been picked to finish first, though the Hustlin’ Owls earned just four of 10 first place votes.  Eastern Oregon was picked second with two first place votes while Warner Pacific was just one point back in third, also with two first place votes.  Southern Oregon earned the final two first place votes in fourth and were followed by Northwest, College of Idaho, Corban, Concordia, Northwest Christian and Evergreen.

The Geoduck men will open up the 2012-13 season on November 1 with an exhibition contest at home against the Seattle Mountaineers.  Their first counting game comes a few days later when they travel up to Kirkland for a non-conference tilt with conference-foe Northwest.   The Evergreen women will open up the season at home on Nov. 13 with an exhibition against crosstown foe Saint Martin’s before opening up the season in earnest on Nov. 17 at Puget Sound.
