Trio of Geoduck Hoopsters Named Academic All-CCC

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Proving that they can take care of business in the classroom as well as on the court, three Geoducks have been honored as Bank of the Cascades Academic All-CCC, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Senior Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) was the lone men’s basketball player recognized for the Geoducks, earning honors in pre-medicine.  On the court, he is currently sixth in CCC in three-point field goals made, averaging 2.4 per contest.

Senior forward Maddie Graves (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) was one of two women honored for Evergreen.  With an academic focus on psychology and education, she is averaging 10.3 minutes per game on floor for the Geoducks, putting up an average of 2.3 ppg off the bench.

Junior guard Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Edmonds CC) was the other Geoduck woman honored by the conference after earning honors in psychology and education.  She is fifth in the CCC in assists with 4.2 per game and sixth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.5 as Evergreen’s starting point guard.

To earn recognition as a CCC scholar-athlete, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and sophomore standing.

Top-Ranked Eastern Oregon Pulls Past Evergreen, 82-67

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Earning points from 12 different players, the top-ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers earned a balanced 82-67 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

It was the Geoducks (2-19, 1-12 CCC) who took the initial lead as freshman guard Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) nailed a deep three-pointer just 20 seconds in.  Eastern Oregon (24-1, 12-1 CCC) answered back with a three-pointer of their own  as the Mounties used a 13-2 run to open up an eight point lead.

Evergreen found a run of their own, going on an 8-0 stretch to tie the Mounties, ranked number one for the third straight week in the latest NAIA DII Top 25, at 13-13.  Eastern again pushed the pace, building a double-digit lead with 3:50 to go in the first period as the Mountaineers took a 39-26 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Geoducks played right with the top team in the nation, eventually pulling back within single-digits on a layup by Johnson with 3:47 to go in the game.   As the clock continued to tick down, the Geoducks were forced to foul, allowing EOU to earn eight of their last 10 points from the charity stripe as Eastern Oregon earned the 82-67 win.

Evergreen was led by a game-high 21 points from Johnson, the third straight 20-plus game for the true freshman.  Junior Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) added 13 points while Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Edmonds CC) chipped in 12 points.  The Geoducks shot 36.1% on the night, making 26-of-72 attempts, including nine from behind the arc.

Eastern Oregon was led by 17 points off the bench from Cody Thurmond, including a perfect 10-for-10 on free throws.  Trent Roos added 13 points in 20 minutes played while Michael Crane nearly earned the double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.  EOU shot 45.6% on the night, sinking 26-of-57 shots, including 11-of-23 from downtown.

The Geoducks hit the road next week, traveling to Portland to take on Warner Pacific.  Tip with the Knights is set for 7:30 p.m. in Portland, Ore.

#5 Mounties Survive Ambitious Geoducks, 50-45

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The fifth-ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers had to put together a full 40 minutes to hold off the upset-minded Evergreen Geoducks, 50-45, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Mounties (23-2, 13-0 CCC) took the initial lead on a jumper by Korrie Bourne but the Geoducks (5-12, 4-9 CCC) came to play, earning the early lead as EOU found themselves in an unfamiliar spot.  After a see-saw battle over much of the first half, the Mountaineers finally grabbed back the lead on another Bourn jumper with 2:33 left to play in the opening period.  Eastern Oregon pushed the advantage to five-points at halftime, leading 27-22.

In the second half, EOU pushed the lead into double-digits on a pair of three-pointers but the Geoducks quickly erased the differential, getting back within four points just a few possessions later.  Eastern managed to push the lead to 10 again with 7:24 left to go and despite their best efforts, Evergreen couldn’t pull even as the Mounties remained perfect in conference play with the 50-45 win.

Evergreen was led by nine points and 14 rebounds from junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS).  Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Skagit Valley CC) also added nine points for the Geoducks, who shot just 37.0% from the field, making 17-of-46 attempts.  Evergreen did hold the advantage on the glass, outrebounding EOU by a tally of 38-31.

Eastern Oregon was led by 15 points and nine rebounds from Chayla Jones.  Brooke Randall chalked up 11 for the Mounties, also dishing out five assists.  The Mounties shot 34.7% from the field, making 17-of-49 attempts, including five from behind the arc.

The Geoducks hit the road next weekend, traveling to the Rose City to take on Warner Pacific.  Tip with the Knights is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Portland, Ore.

Yotes Use Long Ball to Best Geoducks, 89-78

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Putting up 10 three-pointers, including eight in the first half, the College of Idaho Yotes earned an 89-78 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Senior Rodney Delgardo opened up the scoring just 16 seconds in as a three-ball put the Yotes (11-11, 7-5 CCC) up early.  The Geoducks (2-18, 1-11 CCC) answered back with a jumper by Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) to keep things tight.  The Yotes continued to hold a slight lead until the 13:22 mark when freshman Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) drained a three-pointer that gave Evergreen a 17-16 lead.

The Yotes answered back with a three-ball by Duncan Koga and another by Taylor Pruett as C of I continued to push the lead, eventually hitting double-digits with 6:39 left to play in the opening period.  Evergreen cut the differential down to just three with 14 seconds left to play on a Johnson layup but Antonio Garrett hit a pair of three throws with two ticks left to give College of Idaho the 47-42 halftime lead.

In the second half, Evergreen battled back to within three points on a layup by Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) with 13:14 left to play but the Yotes continued to make shots to stop any rally the Geoducks tried to put together.  The lead hit double-digits again with 4:30 left to play and Evergreen couldn’t find an opportunity to get back in as College of Idaho earned the 89-78 win.

Evergreen was led by a second-straight 24 point performance from Johnson, who also added seven assists in 34 minutes on the floor.  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Edmonds CC) added 14 points while Dickens picked up 11 points off the bench.  Wagner rounded out the Evergreen scorers in double-digits with 10 points on the night.

College of Idaho was led by 16 points from Garrett.  Miguel Rodriguez added 19 points while Sydney Donaldson chipped in 14 points in the win.  Delgardo finished with 13 points while Koga came off the bench to put in 11 points for the Yotes.  As a team, C of I shot 47.7% on the night, making 31-of-65 attempts from the field, including 10-of-26 from behind the three-point arc.

Things don’t get any easier for the Geoducks as they play host to top-ranked Eastern Oregon on Saturday night.  Tip with the Mounties is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

#17 Yotes Fight Past Geoducks, 63-52

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Junior forward Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS) put up a game-high 24 points to earn the double-double but when the buzzer sounded, it was the 17th-ranked College of Idaho Lady Yotes earning the 63-52 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Laura Geis gave the Lady Yotes (14-6, 10-2 CCC) the early lead on a jumper just nine seconds into the game and College of Idaho would never trail the rest of the way.  After the Yotes pushed the lead to 11 with 10:36 to go in the first half, the Geoducks (5-11, 4-8 CCC) battled back to get within one point on a three-pointer by Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Edmonds CC) with 59 seconds to play in the first half.

Geis managed two more baskets in the final minute of the period, giving C of I the 26-21 lead heading into the break.  College of Idaho shot 42.3% in the first half, making 11-of-26 attempts from the field, compared with 33.3% on nine-of-27 shooting for the Geoducks.

In the second half, the two teams continued to play even as the lead hovered around seven points nearly the entire period.  Evergreen cut it to four points on a jumper by Swain with 6:24 left to play but the Yotes answered back with a three-ball by Aleah Lowber as College of Idaho eventually picked up the win, 63-52.

Evergreen was led by the 24 points and 11 rebounds from Swain, who earned 15 of those points in the second half alone.  Clark finished with 13 points on the night to go with seven assists while Jessica Denmon put up 11 points with seven rebounds in the losing effort.  The Geoducks shot 51.9% in the second half to finish at 42.6% shooting for the game.

College of Idaho was led by 21 points off the bench from Lowber, who had four from behind the arc and was seven-for-eight from the charity stripe.  Katelin Shannon added 13 points in the win while Geis finished with 11 points in the win.  The Yotes were aided by 14-of-21 shooting on free throws, compared with just six attempts for the Geoducks.

Evergreen returns to action on Saturday night, playing host to fifth-ranked Eastern Oregon.  Tip with the Mountaineers is set for 5:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
