Evergreen Blanks Beacons, 2-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Wrapping up the first half of conference play, the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 2-0 win over the Northwest Christian Beacons in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

It didn’t take long for the Geoducks to get on the board as Ethan Sumlin (Centennial, Colo./Littleton HS) collected the rebound following an attempt by Dyson Fowler (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si HS) and fired it in for the 1-0 lead in just the 18th minute.

Evergreen extended the lead in the 24th minute as Jeff Roland (Windsor, Colo./Windsor HS) learned from Sumlin’s score, collecting the rebound following a shot by Mirza Memic (Bellevue, Wash./Whatcom CC) and putting in his first goal of the season to give the Geoducks the 2-0 lead.

After out-shooting the Beacons, 10-3, in the first half, the Geoducks went on the defensive in the second period, holding just a 4-2 edge in shots but it was enough to earn their sixth win of the season to remain in second place in the CCC table with 18 points.

The Geoducks head to Caldwell, Idaho on Wednesday afternoon to take on College of Idaho before returning to Olympia next Saturday for a showdown with first-place Concordia (Ore.).

Evergreen Edged At Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Putting together three competitive sets, the Evergreen Geoducks played well but it wasn’t enough as the Northwest Eagles earned the straight-set win, 25-18, 25-18, 26-24, in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Friday night at NU Pavilion in Kirkland, Wash.

The first set was competitive all throughout as the Geoducks never let Northwest take a very large lead.  It wasn’t until a 5-1 run in the closing points that the Eagles really pulled ahead, taking the 25-18 win.

In the second set, the Geoducks used a 5-0 run to take an early 6-2 lead over the Eagles.  Northwest eventually used a 5-0 run, all on Geoduck errors, to pull ahead 10-9 and the two squads continued to battle for much of the frame.  The Eagles used a late five-point swing to put the set out of reach and a Geoduck service error gave Northwest another 25-18 win.

The third set nearly went Evergreen’s way as the Geoducks found themselves leading 23-21 late but Northwest used three straight kills by Rae Ann Haistings to slip past the Geoducks and clinch the match with a 26-24 set three victory.

Evergreen was led by 10 kills from Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Trevecca Nazarene Univ.).  Sasha Nash (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) led the Geoducks with 24 assists while Sonja Arrasi-Nash (Sandy, Utah/Westminster College) picked up 12 digs on the night.

Northwest was led by 10 kills from Olivia Vandlac.  Ashton Arbuthnot put up 33 assists on the night while Heather Shulke led all players with 21 digs for the Eagles.  As a team, NU had 42 kills with 15 errors on 118 total attack.

Hat Trick Leads Beacons Past Geoducks, 3-2

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Freshman Melyssa Weber tripled her season goal total with a hat trick as the Northwest Christian Beacons outlasted the Evergreen Geoducks, 3-2, in double overtime in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

Weber opened up the scoring early as the Beacons (5-4-2, 3-0-0 CCC) got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute after the freshman dribbled up the field and fired a shot past Evergreen (0-7-1, 0-3-0 CCC) keeper Lauren Davidson (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) for the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Weber doubled the lead for the Beacons in the 53rd minute, taking the cross from Mishayla Bertelsen before finishing on the fair post for the score.  The Geoducks cut into the lead in the 69th minute as Katie Mendoza (Burien, Wash./Highline CC) sent in a cross from the left side and senior Haley Lightfoot (Spokane, Wash./North Idaho College) put the ball past NCU’s Kristen Fulbright for Evergreen’s first goal of the afternoon.

Evergreen evened it up in the 74th minute following a foul on the far sideline which allowed Kori Lerch (Chester, Va./Matoaca HS)to send in a great free ball to the waiting head of Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS), who pushed it into the net for the equalizer.

After a scoreless first overtime, Weber continued her magical match, stealing the ball from an Evergreen defender in the 103rd minute and dribbling around Davidson before putting in the game-winner on an open net for her third goal of the match and sixth goal of the season.  With the win, the Beacons remain undefeated in CCC play.

The Beacons held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in the first half.  Davidson had a strong day defending the net, finishing with five saves on the day.  Fulbright made two saves for the Beacons to collect the win.
