‘Cats Crush Geoducks, 100-59

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Playing their final non-conference game of the season, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t find their shot against the Central Washington Wildcats, falling 100-59, on Tuesday night at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.

The Wildcats set the hurried pace early and the scoreboard showed that as CWU built a double-digit lead on a jumper by Derrick Davis that put the ‘Cats up, 20-9, with 13:23 to play in the opening period.  UW transfer Mark McLaughlin converted on an and-one opportunity with 8:08 left to play that put Central up, 34-14.

Central continued to extend the lead, pulling ahead by 27 at halftime at 49-22.  The Geoducks had some great looks in the first half but could only convert on eight of 29 attempts for 27.6%.  On the other end of the court, the ‘Cats didn’t have a similar problem, making 19-of-40 attempts for 47.5%.

The trend continued into the second half as Evergreen’s shots struggled to fall as the Geoducks began to run out of time to mount a comeback.    The Wildcats continued to hit their shots as the lead continued to grow, hitting 40 with just under six minutes left to play.  CWU would cruise the rest of the way, earning the 100-59 win.

Evergreen was led by 15 points from Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon).  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho./Edmonds CC) added 10 points while Jakob Herron-Berentsen (Sacramento, Calif./Grays Harbor CC) brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Central Washington was led by 21 points from McLaughlin.  Jordan Coby added 15 points off the bench while Chris Holmes chalked up 13 points in the win.  Davis wrapped up the ‘Cats in double-digits, posting 12 points on the night.

The Geoducks will now turn their focus back to the Cascade Conference schedule, playing host to Corban next Monday.  Tip with the Warriors is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

No. 8 Falcons Fly Past Geoducks, 80-45

SEATTLE – Playing a team ranked in the top-ten nationally for the second straight night, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t earn the upset as the eighth-ranked Seattle Pacific Falcons earned the 80-45 win on Saturday evening at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.

Seattle Pacific (8-1) got off to the quick start, pushing the lead into double-digits just over five minutes into the game on a jumper by Cory Hutsen that gave SPU the 14-4 lead.  The Geoducks (1-7) found their shot at the Falcons cooled a bit but SPU continued to stay warm from behind the arc as the lead continued to grow.

The advantage hit 20 points for the Falcons with a little over five minutes to go in the first half as Alex Weber-Brader made a layup to give Seattle Pacific the 34-14 lead.  The differential would hover around 20 for the remainder of the period as SPU took the 40-20 lead into the break.

The Falcons continued to fly away in the second half as the lead approached 30 around the midpoint of the half.  The Geoducks continued to battle , improving their shooting percentage to X in the second half but it wasn’t enough to close the gap, falling 80-45.

Evergreen was led by 15 points off the bench from senior Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC).  Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) scored nine for the green and white, one night after posting 24 points against Lewis-Clark State.  The Geoducks made 16-of-48 attempts on the night, including identical 8-of-24 in each half, for 33.3%.

Seattle Pacific was led by 14 points from David Downs.  Jobi Wall added 13 points while Gonzaga transfer Andy Poling finished with 12.  Weber-Brader led the SPU bench with 10 points on the night.  The Falcons shot 45.9% on the night, making 28-of-61 attempts.

The Geoducks wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they head across to mountains to take on Central Washington.  Tip with the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.

No. 10 Warriors Battle Past Geoducks, 78-63

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Evergreen junior Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) put up 24 points but it wasn’t enough as the 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors earned a 78-63 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The  Warriors (11-0) earned the first points of the game on a pair of free throws by Nick Fromm just 52 seconds in and LCSC controlled the pace the rest of the first half.  Lewis-Clark State pushed the lead to double-digits on a three-pointer by Donte Archie with 9:40 left to play to give the Warriors the 22-11 lead.  The differential stayed about the same the rest of the way to halftime as LCSC took the 39-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Geoducks (1-6) fought back, using a 14-2 run to tie the game on a three-pointer by Peters with 14:47 left to play.  The score stayed close until just after the ten-minute mark as the Warriors slowly began to pull away.  The lead hit double-digits again with 6:39 left on the clock as Lewis-Clark State stayed undefeated on the year with the 78-63 win.

The Geoducks were paced by the 24 points from Peters, who connected on nine-of-11 attempts, including three-of-four from behind the arc.  Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) came off the bench to score 11 for the Geoducks.  Evergreen shot 41.5% on the game, making 22-of-53 attempts from the field.

Lewis-Clark State was led by 11 points off the bench from both Archie and Derrick Wofford.  Robert Ellis led the Warrior starters with 10 points on the night.  LCSC connected on 26-of-48 attempts for 54.2%.

The Geoducks are back in action again on Saturday night, traveling up to Seattle to take on Seattle Pacific. Tip with the Falcons is set for 7 pm at Brougham Pavilion.

MSU-Northern Compass a Win Over Geoducks, 52-50

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Overcoming a nine-point halftime deficit, the Montana State-Northern Skylights played to a 52-50 win over the host Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Skylights (4-3) used a pair of three-pointers to jump out to a 6-0 lead but the advantage didn’t last long as the Geoducks (1-3) pressured MSUN to 17 first-half turnovers, converting for 20 points off giveaways as the Geoducks took their first halftime lead of the season into the break at 29-21.

Montana State-Northern quickly fixed their mistakes at halftime and was able to pull even with 11:44 left in the game on a free-throw by Taylor Cummings.  Evergreen fought back as the two teams exchanged leads for the next nine minutes.

The Skylights used a layup by Nikki Tresch to take a 52-50 lead with 2:26 remaining and both teams went cold the rest of the way as neither team was able to get a basket, including an attempt at the buzzer by Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Skagit Valley CC) that clanged out for the Geoducks as they lost the tight game to the Skylights.

Evergreen was led by 12 points from junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS), who also added nine rebounds, five steals and a block on the night.  Senior Jessica Edge (Lake Stevens, Wash./Skagit Valley CC) added 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench.  The Geoducks turned the ball over just 12 times on the night, compared with 21 for MSUN.

Montana State-Northern was led by 15 points off the bench from Kacie McKeon.  Tresch finished with 14 points in the win.  The Skylights shot 38.6% on the night, making 17-of-44 attempts from the field.

The Geoducks will take a bit of a break as they don’t hit the hardwood until Dec. 14 when they head over the mountains to take on Central Washington in an exhibition.  Tip with the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.

Boxers Punch Out Geoducks, 57-31

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Held to just 25.5% shooting on the night, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t find a way to keep up with the Pacific Boxers, falling 57-31 in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Tuesday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Both teams struggled to find their touch early as neither team was able to get into double-digits until a jumper by Aunhea Walla put Pacific up, 10-5, with 7:22 to go in the first half.  The Geoducks eventually found their shot and kept it close for a bit, trailing just seven at the break at 22-15.

In the second half, it was the Boxers who came out fighting, pushing the lead deep into the teens and hitting 20 on a jumper by Kaila Johnson that gave Pacific a 37-17 lead with 13:24 left to play.  Evergreen managed to keep things even for most of the remainder of the game but the differential was too large to overcome as Pacific earnd the 57-31 non-conference win.

Evergreen was led by nine points and 10 rebounds from junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS), who also added four blocks in the loss.  As a team, the Geoducks forced 23 Pacific turnovers but struggled to capitalize, scoring just eight points off turnovers.

Pacific was led by 16 points from Paige Jensen, who also added nine rebounds to just miss the double-double.  The Boxers shot 51.3% on the night, making 20-of-39 attempts.  Pacific also did a good job controlling the glass, outrebounding the Geoducks, 37-26.

Evergreen will look to bounce back on Thursday night when they play host to Montana State Northern in another non-conference tilt.  Tip with the Skylights is set for 6 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
