Owls Escape Geoduck Upset Bid, 71-68

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Evergreen Geoducks did nearly everything they could to earn the upset victory but it wasn’t meant to be as the defending national champion Oregon Tech Owls earned a 71-68 win in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday night on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls, Ore.

After the Owls got off to an 11-0 lead, freshman Michael Potter (Ridgefield, Wash./Ridgefield HS) singlehandedly brought the Geoducks back, hitting three three-pointers and a pair of free throws to knot the game at 11.

Evergreen continued the run and built a four-point lead before the Owls took back the advantage.  OIT continued to hold the advantage, though a late Geoduck run cut the lead heading into the break as Oregon Tech led 33-26.

In the second half, OIT continued to push the pace as the advantage went back into double-digits on a three-pointer by Mihajlo Matic with just under nine minutes left.  The Geoducks didn’t give up as a three-pointer by Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) with 1:14 left to play brought Evergreen back within four points at 63-59 heading into the final minute of the game.

A tip-in by Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.)  with 38 seconds put the differential at just two points but David Clarke hit a pair of free throws to put OIT up by four once again.  The Geoducks kept fighting but the Owls hit their free throws down the stretch as OIT earned the 71-68 win to snap a seven-game CCC losing streak.

Evergreen was led by 20 points from Potter, who scored double-digit points for the first time in his collegiate career.  Peters finished with 17 points on the night, including a pair of authority-grabbing dunks.  The Geoducks shot 42.9% for the night, making 24-of-56 attempts, including nine from behind the arc.

Oregon Tech was led by 17 points from Josh Johnson, who also had 12 rebounds to earn the double-double.  Matic added 13 points while Clarke finished with 12 points in the win.  The Owls outrebounded the Geoducks, 45-37, on the night.

Evergreen opens up the second half of conference play on Friday night when they travel to Northwest Christian.  Tip with the Beacons is set for 7:30 p.m. in Eugene, Ore.

Second Half Run Leads Owls Past Geoducks

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A big run in the middle of the second half was enough to propel the Oregon Tech Owls past the Evergreen Geoducks, 64-43, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night at Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls, Ore.

The opening period saw the Geoducks taking the initial lead as Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Edmonds CC) drained a three-pointer just 10 seconds into the game.  After a pair of baskets gave the Owls the brief lead, the Geoducks quickly took it back and held the advantage until just under the six minute mark as Colleen Hunt hit a basket that put OIT up by one.

Evergreen briefly grabbed the lead back up Oregon Tech pushed the pace towards the end of the period, using a jumper by Tess Armstrong with seven seconds left  to take a 29-24 lead into the break.

In the second half, the teams played even early but a 15-1 run by the Owls put the game out of reach for the Geoducks.  After falling behind by 17 points with 8:06 left to play, the Geoducks couldn’t find a way to close the gap as Oregon Tech earned the 64-43 win.

Evergreen was led by 16 points from Jessica Edge (Lake Stevens, Wash./Skagit Valley CC).  Clark added 11 points for the Geoducks, who fell to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in Cascade Conference play on the season.  The Geoducks find themselves in seventh place in the CCC standings after the first round of games, which would be good enough to earn a spot in the 2013 CCC Tournament.

Oregon Tech was led by 14 points from Nicole Aboumrad.  Karissa Dixon added 11 points for the Owls.

The Geoducks continue their road swing next week as they open up the second half of conference play on Friday at Northwest Christian.  Tip with the Beacons is set for 5:30 p.m. in Eugene, Ore.

Geoducks Nearly Knock Off #14 Raiders

ASHLAND, Ore. – Putting together a strong 40 minutes, the Evergreen Geoducks nearly earned an upset win but it was the 14th-ranked Southern Oregon Raiders picking up the win, 77-70, in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night in Ashland, Ore.

The Geoducks came to play in the first half as the visiting squad took a 5-0 lead less than 30 seconds in following a three-pointer by Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River HS) and a jumper by freshman Michael Potter (Ridgefield, Wash./Ridgefield HS).  SOU eventually started making shots but Evergreen was right there with them.

The Raiders eventually began to pull away, thanks to some strong shooting from Eric Thompson and Kyle Tedder as the lead hit double-digits with 5:05 on the clock following a free throw by Thompson.  Southern Oregon eventually pushed the lead to 15 points at the break, leading 44-29.

In the second half, the Geoducks continued to battle and it paid off as the differential slowly shrunk.  Evergreen managed to get back within single-digits with about six minutes left to play as Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Edmonds CC) put in a pair to put the score at 66-58.  Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) hit a crucial three-pointer a few possessions later that pulled the Geoducks within six at 69-63 heading into the final minutes.

The Geoducks continued to try to chip away but the Raiders found a way to survive the upset attempt, picking up the 77-70 win.

Evergreen was led by 16 points from Johnson, who also had six assists on the night.  Taylor added 12 points to his season totals while Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) and Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) each added 10.  The Geoducks held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding SOU by a final of 37-34.

Southern Oregon was led by 18 points from Thompson.  David Sturner added 17 points to go with 10 rebounds for SOU while Tedder finished with 14 points on the night.  Dex Daum added 13 points to round out the Raiders in double-digit scoring.  SOU picked up just 11 points from their bench, compared with 22 for the Geoducks.

The Geoducks will be in action again on Saturday night when they travel to Klamath Falls, Ore. to take on Oregon Tech.  Tip with the Owls is set for 7:30 p.m. on Danny Miles Court.

Tale of Two Halves Goes Way of Raiders

ASHLAND, Ore. – After a tight first half that saw 12 lead changes, the Southern Oregon Raiders used a 20-4 run to open the second half as they shot past the Evergreen Geoducks, 74-62, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Friday night in Ashland, Ore.

The first half featured a see-saw battle as neither team was able to hold much of an advantage as SOU took the 32-28 lead into the break.  The Geoducks were led by 12 points from junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS) as they trailed by just four at the break.

The second half was a whole different story as the Raiders came out shooting, pushing the advantage to double-digits with 14:35 left to play on a layup by Melissa Sweat that put SOU up, 43-32.  The lead hit 20 just a few minutes later as Evergreen struggled to put the ball in the basket.

The Geoducks finished the game on a high note, going on a 10-2 run over the final 3:17 but it was too little, too late as the Raiders earned the 74-62 win.

Evergreen was led by 18 points from Swain, who found herself in foul trouble that limited her second half minutes.  Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Skagit Valley CC) added 13 points to go with eight rebounds while Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Edmonds CC) added 12 points in the losing effort.

Southern Oregon was led by 20 points from Alexi Smith.  Allison Gida added 14 points while Carly Meister came off the bench to added 10 points in the win.  The Raiders shot 51.7% on the night, making 30-of-58 attempts.

The Geoducks will look to recover on Saturday night when they travel to Klamath Falls to take on Oregon Tech. Tip with the Owls is set for 5:30 p.m.

Geoducks Ink Six for 2013

OLYMPIA, Wash. – After a strong finish to the 2012 season, the Evergreen Geoducks are already restocking for 2013, having already signed six players to national Letters of Intent.  All six will come to Evergreen as true freshman with four years to play under head coach Adam Fenster.

Myka Arneson – Portland, Ore./Sunset HS

At Sunset HS, Arneson was team captain for the Apollos girls soccer team.  Expected to be either a defender or forward for the Geoducks, she is well versed in Cascade Conference soccer as her father David played at Concordia University in Portland.

Kayla Baskett – Burien, Wash./Holy Names Academy

Baskett, who is expected to play goalkeeper at Evergreen, led Holy Names to a third-place finish in the 2012 WIAA Championships.  Named First-Team All-Metro League as a junior and Second-Team All-Metro League as a senior.  Her father Jasen is owner of Emerald City Basketball Academy, which has produced over 200 collegiate basketball players in the last 12 years.

Jasmine Berlin – Fairview, Ore./Reynolds HS

Berlin will come to Evergreen as a defender/forward after earning All-Star honors at Reynolds HS in Troutdale, Ore.

Emily Gordon – Kent, Wash./Auburn Mountainview HS

A multiple All-SPSL selection at Auburn Mountainview, Gordon will play either on the back row or up front for the Geoducks.  As a senior, she was named First Team All-SPSL as a forward, also earning Most Inspirational and Coach’s Award in her final year at AMHS.  Her father Kelly  played at both University of Washington and Seattle Pacific, earning two national championships under legendary coach Cliff McCrath at SPU.

Monica Whitfield – Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw HS

An all-conference midfielder at Enumclaw HS, Whitfield comes to Evergreen expected to contribute at both midfield and forward.  Standing just 4-11, she was named SPSL 3A Offensive Player of the Year.

Vanessa Zamora – Vancouver, Wash./Hudson’s Bay HS

A four-time letter winner at HBHS in soccer, Zamora will come to Evergreen with a number of awards already on her mantle.  The team captain for the Eagles this season, she also earned a number of academic awards.
