Spurr Spurs Geoducks Over Beacons, 1-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Scoring his fourth goal of the season, sophomore Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) led the Evergreen Geoducks over the Northwest Christian Beacons, 1-0, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Wednesday evening at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

Evergreen (4-2-1, 2-1-0 CCC) held the possession advantage early but the Beacons (0-6-0, 0-3-0 CCC) held tough in the first half as neither team could score before the halftime whistle. The Geoducks held a 10-2 advantage in shots during the first half but NCU keeper Max Torres made three stops when he needed to.

In the second half, the Geoducks continued to press and the offensive pressure finally paid off in the 72nd minute as Greg Wolfe (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Shoreline CC) got in a ball in to Spurr, who finished it from the middle of the box for the eventual game winner.

The Geoducks finished the match holding a 23-6 shot advantage, as well as an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.  Evergreen keeper Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS/Shoreline CC) made three saves to collect his fourth shutout of the season while Torres finished with five saves for the Beacons.

Evergreen hits the road on Saturday to take on first-place Corban in a CCC counter.  First kick with the Warriors is set for 3 p.m. in Salem, Ore.

Cross Country
The Geoducks ran last week in Oregon and will take this week off from racing but will be hosting an adventure run for anyone looking for a little action on Saturday morning.  For more information, click here.

Men’s Soccer
YOUR Geoduck men’s soccer team is home TODAY as they take on Northwest Christian, beginning at 5 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch (Field #4). In addition to 90 minutes of cheering on Evergreen, fans will have the opportunity to throw a chair as fair as they can. Sound intriguing? Then come on out!

Women’s Soccer
The Geoducks wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday at Trinity Lutheran in Everett, Wash.  Evergreen will be providing live stats of the match, technology and weather permitting.

Volleyball
The Geoducks are back at home this weekend as they host Corban and Northwest Christian.  Come out and support the green and white and don’t miss an opportunity to BE the Geoducks on Saturday.

Saints Hold Off Geoducks in Olympia Showdown

LACEY, Wash. – Junior Victoria Love (Seaside, Calif./Seaside HS/Hartnell College) threw down 20 kills but it wasn’t enough as the Evergreen Geoducks fell to the Saint Martin’s Saints in four sets in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday evening at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey, Wash.

Meeting for the first time since 2010, the two Thurston County rivals were well-matched early.  An 8-1 SMU run gave the Saints an advantage that the Geoducks just couldn’t overcome as SMU took the first frame,  25-17.

The second set belonged to the Geoducks but not without a fight from the host Saints.  SMU pulled within two points at 22-20 but the Geoducks held on to collect the 25-22 set two win to tie the match at one set each.

Evergreen struggled in the third set as the Saints pulled out to an early lead and the Geoducks couldn’t complete the comeback.  The green and white got within three points late but the Saints held on for the 25-19 set three win.

It looked like the Geoducks would force a fifth set early as the Geoducks led early.  With the score at 17-16 in favor of the Geoducks, Saint Martin’s went on a 9-1 run to clinch the match with a 25-18 set four win.

The Geoducks were led by the 20 kills from Love, who hit .283 on the night.  Molly King (Centralia, Wash./Centralia HS/Tacoma CC) added 11 kills.  Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt. Hood CC) put up 40 assists.  The Geoducks hit .176 on the night, connecting for 46 kills and 21 errors on 142 total attacks.

Saint Martin’s was led by 18 kills from Kristyn Ross.  Carrie Starbuck and Kyra Davidson each had 10 kills on the night.  Cymbree Decosta put up 39 assists while Jessica Riddle added 23 digs in the win.  SMU hit .266 on the night with 52 kills and 16 errors on 139 attacks.

The Geoducks return to the court on Friday night when they play host to Corban in a Cascade Conference match.  First serve with the Warriors is set for 7 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Owls Surprise Geoducks, 3-1

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Picked to finish last in the Cascade Conference this season, the Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls scored a big win on Saturday, upsetting the Evergreen Geoducks, 3-1, in a CCC men’s soccer match in Klamath Falls, Ore.

The Geoducks (3-2-1, 1-1-0 CCC) struck first as sophomore Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash/Roosevelt) dribbled past keeper Loren Jessen in the sixth minute and fired in his third goal of the season for the lead over the Owls (2-4-0, 1-1-0 CCC).

Oregon Tech scored the equalizer in the 56th minute on a penalty kick by Ashton Betts. The Hustlin’ Owls took the lead in the 70th minute as Betts fed in a corner kick that found the head of Colton Grytness, who guided it in for the 2-1 advantage.   OIT scored one more goal in the 87th minute as Carlso Rodriguez fed in a ball to Luis Valdez, who dribbled past Evergreen keeper Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC).

Evergreen held a 21-20 advantage in shots, though Oregon Tech outshot the Geoducks, 12-10, in the second half.  The game was also a physical one with 24 total fouls whistled and six combined cards shown.

The Geoducks return to Olympia on Wednesday afternoon as they play host to Northwest Christian.  First kick with the Beacons is set for 5 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch.

Geoducks Match at Northwest Postponed

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Friday’s Cascade Conference volleyball match between Evergreen and Northwest has been postponed following the lack of officials.  The match will be made up at a time and location to be determined in the near future.

Officials were unaware of the match and Northwest was unable to procure qualified officials on short notice, forcing the postponement. Evergreen and Northwest are next scheduled to play on Nov. 8 in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks will now take the floor next on Tuesday when they travel to Lacey to take on Saint Martin’s in a non-conference match.  First serve with the Saints is set for 7 p.m. at Marcus Pavilion.
