Oregon Tech Sweeps Past Geoducks

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls found a way to get points when they needed as the Evergreen Geoducks were swept in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Saturday night in Klamath Falls, Ore.

In the first half, the teams came out evenly matched as neither squad could earned much of a lead early.  With the score tied 10-10, Oregon Tech managed four straight to open the gap and the Geoducks couldn’t catch up, allowing another four-point run late that allowed the Hustlin’ Owls to earn the 25-18 set one win.

The second set looked to be a good one for the Geoducks as Evergreen took the lead early and seemed to be on their way to tying the match, leading 15-13.  Then the wheels came off as the Owls put together 12 straight points to take the second set, 25-15.

Evergreen battled like crazy in the third frame to force a fourth set and it looked that way late as a three-point run put the Geoducks within a point of taking the set at 24-21 but the Owls put together a three-point run of their own.  After a number of sideouts, Oregon Tech finally closed out the match, using three-straight points to earn the 31-29 set three win and clinch the match in straight sets.

Evergreen was led by eight kills each from Victoria Love (Seaside, Calif./Seaside HS/Hartnell College) and Molly King (Centralia, Wash./Centralia HS/Tacoma CC). Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt. Hood CC) had 20 assists while Liza Domingo (Ka’a’awa, Hawai’i/Kahuku HS/Lower Columbia College) led the Geoducks with 15 digs.

Oregon Tech was led by 12 kills from Marlee Smith and 11 kills from Kelsey Sampson.  Victoria Porter and Kayleigh Whelchel had 15 assists each while Marie Baumann led the back row with 15 digs on the night.

The Geoducks return home next weekend to open up the second half of conference play against Eastern Oregon on Friday and College of Idaho on Saturday.  Both matches are set for 7 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Eagles Blank Geoducks, 2-0, in CCC Opener

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Playing under ideal skies, the Evergreen Geoducks did not earn an ideal result, falling to the Northwest Eagles, 2-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at NU Soccer Field in Kirkland, Wash.

The Eagles (5-5-0, 1-0-0 CCC) got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute as Annie-Bryn Stauffer unleashed a left-footed missile from 20 yards out that snuck into the upper left corner and past Geoduck (1-5-0, 0-1-0 CCC) keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC).

Northwest doubled the advantage in the 74th minute as Tiffany Taylor fed in a ball to Acaia Johnson, who dribbled up the right side and shot across the goal into the lower left for the score and 2-0 lead.

Despite allowing the two goals, MacKenzie was strong in net, making seven saves on 17 total shots by NU.  Northwest’s Patty Hughes also made seven saves as every Evergreen shot was on target, though none could sneak past the Eagle keeper.

The Geoducks remain on the road next week as they travel to Corban on Thursday.  First kick with the Warriors is set for 4 p.m. in Salem, Ore.

CALDWELL, Idaho – After conceding an early goal, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t mount a comeback, falling to the College of Idaho Yotes, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Yotes (2-8-0, 2-4-0 CCC) got on the board in just the seventh minute as Yan Gioseffi sent a free kick into the box and Jorge Brambila took control of the ball, firing it in from the top of the six-yard box for the 1-0 lead.

College of Idaho made it 2-0 in the 64th minute as Gioseffi again took advantage of a free kick, firing it into the right corner from just outside the box as the Geoducks (4-4-2, 2-3-1 CCC) found themselves down by two goals.

Evergreen finished the match on a high note as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) sent in a long ball to Sebastian Lyons (Port Townsend, Wash./Port Townsend HS/Skagit Valley CC), who beat two defenders before putting it in for his first goal of the season.

Geoducks Battle With Raiders Before Falling In Three

ASHLAND, Ore. – Traveling to one of the traditional powers in the Cascade Conference, the Evergreen Geoducks put up a good fight before falling to the Southern Oregon Raiders in a CCC volleyball match on Friday night in Ashland, Ore.

In the first set, the Raiders weren’t quite sure who the team on the other side of the net was as the Geoducks battled with SOU.  With the match tied at 15-15, the Raiders took the lead for the final time, eventually using a three-point streak to clinch the first set, 25-21.

SOU used a quick start in set two to pull ahead early at 8-2 but Evergreen battled right back into it, pulling within three at 11-8.  A few points later, the Geoducks fell victim to a six-point run by Southern Oregon and a late Evergreen push wasn’t enough to prevent the Raiders from earning the 25-18 set two win.

The third set featured two SOU runs that gave the Raiders enough of an advantage to keep the Geoducks at Bay.  Leading 16-13, Southern pushed the lead to 20-13 and the gap was too much for Evergreen to overcome as the Raiders clinched the match with a 25-16 set three win.

Evergreen was led by 13 kills from Victoria Love (Seaside, Calif./Seaside HS/Hartnell College).  Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt Hood CC) led the way with 18 assists while Natimia Barker-Doss (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson HS/Pierce College) had 12 assits.  The Geoducks hit .170 on the match, connecting for 35 kills with 19 errors on 94 attacks.

Southern Oregon was led by 14 kills with just one errors for Nikki Keller, who hit an incredible .812 on just 16 attacks.  Emma Gasman added 11 kills while Paulla Pinheiro put up 10 kills in the win.  Lauren McGowne earned the assist on 50 of 52 kills while Renee Yomtob finished with 12 digs on the night.
