Geoducks Fly Past No. 21 OIT, 67-58

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Evergreen Geoducks’ bus didn’t move very fast as they battled snow on the 460 mile drive to Oregon Tech but the Geoducks pushed the pace once they arrived at Danny Miles Court as they upset the nationally-ranked Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls, 67-58, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Friday night in Klamath Falls, Ore.

It took over 24 hours for the Geoducks to make it to Klamath Falls and it took a little time for the green and white to warm up but once they did, 21st-ranked Oregon Tech had a hard time stopping them.  After trailing early, the Geoducks used an 11-0 run to pull ahead by four points as the Hustlin’ Owls were forced to hustle the rest of the half.  Evergreen continued to play strong on defense and took care of business on offense, taking a 34-26 lead into the break.

The second half continued to roll the way of the Geoducks as Evergreen opened the period on an 8-0 run to pull ahead by 16 points early.  The lead hit 20 points with 11:40 left to play as LaNiecia Weatherspoon (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS/Yakima Valley CC) put up a pair of free throws that put Evergreen up 54-34.

Oregon Tech stormed back, using a 10-0 lead to cut the Geoduck lead in half at 54-44 before the Geoducks would get another basket.  The Lady Owls pulled back within single digits as the clock continued to tick down.  Ashley Vandenbrink hit a three-pointer for OIT with 1:46 left to go that cut the lead to five points at 58-53 but the Geoducks fired up the jets once again to finish strong and earn the 67-58 win.  It is just the third win all time for the Geoducks in Klamath Falls and fifth win all-time over Oregon Tech.

Evergreen was led by 20 points and 15 rebounds from Brittany Gray (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge HS/Skagit Valley CC).  Sadee Jones (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS) added 14 points while Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS/Edmonds CC) finished with 11 points in the win.  The Geoducks held a 47-33 advantage on the glass to earn the conference win.

Oregon Tech was led by 15 points from Tess Armstrong.  Kassi Conditt chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds to earn the double-double but they were the only two Lady Owls in double-digits as OIT shot just 37.3% on the night, making 22-of-59 attempts.

The Geoducks face another big test on Saturday night when they travel to Ashland to take on Southern Oregon.  Tip with the Raiders is set for 5:30 p.m. at McNeal Pavilion.

Northwest Shoots Past Geoducks, 83-74

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Connecting on 21-of-27 free throws, the Northwest Eagles picked up a Cascade Conference win, holding off the Evergreen Geoducks, 83-74, in a CCC men’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The first half went back and forth for all 20 minutes as the lead changed three times and neither team pulling far ahead. Ryan McIntosh hit a pair of free throws for NU in the closing seconds to take a 40-35 lead into the break as the Eagles were aided by five first-half threes to earn the halftime lead.

In the second half, the Eagles came out strong and the Geoducks just couldn’t close the gap as NU went to the charity stripe 21 times, making 16 of those attempts en route to the 83-74 win.

Evergreen was led by 17 points and 11 rebounds from Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC).  Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash/Hazen HS) added 15 points while Dre Taylor (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS/North Idaho College) added 12 points. Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC) added 11 points and Jordan Dam (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson HS/Centralia College) put up 10 points to round out the Geoducks in double-digit scoring.

Northwest was led by 24 pints from Michael Greene.  Nemanja Grujicic added 18 points in the win while McIntosh chipped in 15 points for the Eagles.  NU shot 50.9% from the field, making 28-of-55 attempts on the night.

The Geoducks hit the road next week, traveling to Oregon Tech on Friday night and Southern Oregon on Saturday.

Eagles Hold Off Geoducks Down Stretch, 76-73

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Evergreen Geoducks fought back from an 11-point deficit in the second half but they couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to the Northwest Eagles, 76-73, in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

After Evergreen held a three-point lead at the break, a six-point run to start the second half put the Eagles up by three points just over 90 seconds into the period.  Northwest grabbed their biggest lead of the game with 11:10 left to go as Sanda Milovic hit a jumper in the pain to put NU ahead, 58-47.

The Geoducks used a run of their own to tie things up with 1:37 to go as Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS/Edmonds CC) completed a 14-4 run to pull even at 69-69.  NU hit a jumper on their next possession to retake the lead and the Eagles never looked back, holding on for the 76-73 win.

Evergreen was led by 26 points from Clark, who also had four assists on the night.  Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Skagit Valley CC) added 13 points and eight assists as the only other Geoduck in double-digit scoring.  The Geoducks controlled the glass, outrebounding the Eagles, 37-27 on the night.

Northwest was led by 26 points and 10 assists from Domi Mendezona.  Milovic added 21 points in the win while Chanara Greene put up 10 points to go with eight rebounds in just 18 minutes played.  NU shot 18 of 21 from the charity stripe to earn the conference win.

The Geoducks will hit the road next week, traveling to Oregon Tech on Friday and Southern Oregon on Saturday.

Johnson Soars at UW Invitational

SEATTLE – Two weeks after becoming the first NAIA high jumper of the year to clear seven feet, freshman Anthony Johnson (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) was at it again on Saturday, clearing 7-2.25 to take second in the men’s high jump at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor on the campus of University of Washington.

In addition to improving his national best in the event, Johnson hit the qualifying standard for the 2014 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships which will be held later this month in Albuquerque, N.M.  His jump currently ties him for ninth-best among collegians this season at all levels and 14th by any American in 2014.

Johnson cleared 2.19m on this third attempt to improve his school record by two inches in the event as he defeated eight NCAA Division I high jumpers to finish second to only two-time Olympian Mike Mason, who won the even with a jump of 6-3.25.

He wasn’t the only Geoducks to post a strong performance as junior Wes Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) placed second in his heat and sixth overall in the 800m run, posting a time of 1:57.52.  The event was won by Travis Vugteveen of Simon Fraser, who ran a 1:54.56 in the third heat to pull past Demetrius Rhodes of Concordia.

The Geoducks will race again on Tuesday night when they head south for the UP/PSU Tuesday Night Races at the University of Portland.
