Loggers Use Quick Start to Defeat Geoducks, 71-58

TACOMA, Wash. – Senior Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC) put up 24 points but the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t pick up the win, falling to the Puget Sound Loggers, 71-58, in  a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first half, it was the Loggers who came out on fire, scoring the first five points before Bryce Phillip (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel HS/Green River CC) scored for the Geoducks.  Evergreen fought back to tie the game early but a 12-3 run gave UPS a nine-point lead with 13:30 to go in the opening half.  The Loggers continued to push the pace, using a layup with 9:30 to go to extend the lead into double-digits and Puget Sound would keep the lead, taking a 38-24 lead into the break.

In the second half, the two teams were even most of the way but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.  The Geoducks used a three-ball by Calhoun with 16:20 left to go to cut the Logger lead to 10 but they would never get any closer, falling 71-58 in the non-conference matchup.

Evergreen was led by the 24 points from Calhoun, who was nine-of-15 from the field, including five-of-seven from the three-point line.  Cameron Faison (Atlanta, Ga./Foster HS/West Valley College) added eight as the Geoducks next leading scorer.  The green and white shot just 39.6% from the field, making 21-of-53 attempts.

Puget Sound was led by 24 points from Rex Nelson.  Keith Shattuck came off the bench to score 11 while Nick Holden finished with 10 points for the Loggers.  UPS had a slight advantage in rebounding, bringing down 38 boards compared with 36 for Evergreen.

The Geoducks play their third Division I opponent of the season on Saturday night when they head up to Seattle to take on WAC member Seattle University in an exhibition.  Tip with the Redhawks is set for 7 p.m. at KeyArena.

Geoducks String Up Win Over Lutes, 66-59

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Four players scored double-digits as the Evergreen Geoducks picked up their first win of the year with a 66-59 victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Lutes (0-1) opened up their season with a strong offensive showing early as they led the Geoducks (1-2) by five with 16 minutes to go in the first half.  The Geoducks battled back to tie things at 14-14 with 10:41 on a layup by Natasha Trinidad (Tacoma, Wash./River Ridge, HS/Pierce CC) .  Evergreen continued to push the pace, using a free throw by Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS/Edmonds CC) to take a seven point lead, 25-18, with 5:46 to play in the first half.  PLU got back within one but a 6-0 Evergreen run to end the half gave the Geoducks the 34-27 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Geoducks would never trail but PLU didn’t give up, pulling back within two points with 9:32 left to go.  Evergreen pushed the lead to double-digits, 59-49, on a pair of free throws by Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Skagit Valley CC) with 2:12 left to go.  The Lutes would get back within three but the Geoducks hit their free throws down the stretch to collect the 66-59 win.

Evergreen was led by 14 points from Clark, who also added five assists in the win.  Denman finished with 13 while Brittany Gray (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge HS/Skagit Valley CC) added 12 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss the double-double.  Sadee Jones (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS) rounded out the Geoducks in double-digit scoring with 10 points and nine rebounds, also missing the double-double by just one board.

Pacific Lutheran was led by 19 points from Samantha Potter, who also led the Lutes with eight rebounds.  Shelly Kilcup added 17 for PLU, who shot 34.0% from the field, making 18-of-53 attempts.  The Lutes were outrebounded by a total of 45-40.

Evergreen hits the road for the first time this season next Friday when they head down to Oregon to face Linfield.  Tip with the Wildcats is set for 6 p.m. in McMinnville, Ore.

Diggers Outlast Geoducks, 66-58

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Holding a slight edge shooting, the Montana Tech Orediggers picked up a 66-58 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Wednesday evening at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

In the opening period the Geoducks (0-2) came out ready to play, leading the Orediggers (3-1) by six points just six minutes into the game.  Montana Tech tied it up a few minutes later around the midway point and the Diggers would hold onto the lead until Brittany Gray (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge HS/Skagit Valley CC) hit a three pointer for Evergreen with 4:15 left to play that would tie the game at 23.

After another brief Tech lead, the Geoducks used a pair of free throws by Jessica Denmon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Skagit Valley CC) to tie things up at 25 all but a jumper by Kabri Emerson with three ticks left gave the Diggers a 27-25 halftime lead.

The second half was another battle as the score stayed tight.  Montana Tech began to pull away  with about five minutes to play, going on a 7-0 run that put them up by 11 at 59-48.  The Geoducks chipped away and cut the gap to four on a jumper by Denmon with 1:27 to play but that was the final basket for the Geoducks as the Orediggers earned the 66-58 win.

Evergreen was led by 14 points each from Denmon and Sadee Jones (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS).  Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS/Edmonds CC) added seven assists for the Geoducks.  As a team, Evergreen was 44.7% from the field, making 21-of-47 attempts.

Montana Tech was led by 15 points from Victoria Turner and 14 from Kelsey DeWitt.  As a team, the Orediggers shot 59.1% from the field, making 26-of-44 attempts.  Montana Tech also held a slight 25-23 advantage on the glass.

Evergreen will be back in action on Friday night when they play host to Pacific Lutheran.  Tip with the Lutes is set for 6 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Watkins Named Red Lion CCC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After helping lead the Evergreen Geoducks to a pair of season-ending victories over Northwest, senior outside hitter Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Mountain View HS/Trevecca Nazarene Univ.) has been named Red Lion Cascade Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.

Watkins  had a great final week of her collegiate career, averaging 4.125 kills per set in wins over Northwest to give the Geoducks a four-match win streak to end the year. Cassidy finished her two-year Evergreen career with 465 kills.

She is the first Evergreen volleyball player to earn weekly honors by the conference since 2010.  The Geoducks finished the 2013 season with a record of 8-15 overall and 7-11 in CCC play, good enough for seventh place in the conference standings.

D1 Bengals Take Bite Out of Geoducks, 99-62

POCATELLO, Idaho – After playing Pac-12 Utah on Friday, the Evergreen Geoducks felt a little more at home against NCAA Division I Idaho State but it was the Big Sky Bengals who earned the win, 99-62, in a men’s basketball exhibition game on Saturday night at Reed Gym in Pocatello, Idaho.

In the first half, the Bengals (1-0) came out excited in their season opener as they pushed the pace and built an early lead over the Geoducks.  A 15-0 run gave ISU a large first half lead as Evergreen was forced to play from behind.  As Idaho State continued to make baskets, the Geoducks won the closing minutes of the first half, using a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 20 at half, 49-29.

Evergreen came out strong in the second half, matching the Bengals shot for shot as the Geoducks headed into the first media timeout having outscored the Bengals, 9-7, in the opening minutes of the second period.  The Evergreen dominance wouldn’t last as Idaho State came out of the first media timeout pushing the pace as the lead began to grow again.

Idaho State’s fresh legs coupled with four games in five days for the Geoducks began to show as the second half continued as the Bengals pulled ahead before taking the game by a final of 99-62.

Evergreen was led by 22 points from sophomore Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash/Hazen HS).  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) put up 14 points against his father’s Dan’s alma mater, also adding 10 rebounds to collect the double-double.  As a team, the Geoducks shot 37% form the field, making 23-of-62 attempts from the field, including 10 three-pointers.

Idaho State was led by 23 points from Jeffrey Solarin, who was 10-of-11 from the field to go with 10 rebounds. Tomas Sanchez added 15 points in the win while Chris Hansen the earned the double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  The Bengals shot 50.8% from the field and were given 35 free throws, sinking 27 from the stripe.

The Geoducks hit the hardwood again on Friday night, traveling to Tacoma to take on Puget Sound as part of the Doug McArthur Tip-Off Classic.  Tip with the Loggers is set for 8 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse.
