PORTLAND, Wash. – Playing under clear skies, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t hold on for the win as they fell to the Concordia Cavaliers, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Tuesday evening in Portland, Ore.
The Geoducks (7-6-3, 5-5-2 CCC) opened up the scoring in the 35th minute as Alberto Brand (Seattle, Wash./University HS/Highline CC) took a pass from Albert Anabtawi (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower HS) and Brand shot on the hop, firing the ball past Arne Niermann for the 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers (12-4-0, 8-3-0 CCC) evened it up shortly before halftime. Following a foul in the box that was called on Evergreen, Septi Danciu went lower left on a penalty kick in the 44th minute to tie the game a 1-1 with his 13th goal of the season.
Concordia broke the tie in the 72nd minute as Danciu fed in a ball to Radcliffe McDougald, who used his left foot from 16 yards out to sneak the ball past Evergreen keeper Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC) for the 2-1 lead and eventual win.
It was the Cavaliers who held an 18-7 shot advantage but Sanchez was strong in net, making seven saves for the Geoducks. Niermann finished with one save for the Cavaliers.
The Geoducks return to action on Saturday when they visit in-state rival Northwest. First kick with the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. in Kirkland, Wash.
