No. 10 Warriors Battle Past Geoducks, 78-63

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Evergreen junior Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) put up 24 points but it wasn’t enough as the 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors earned a 78-63 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The  Warriors (11-0) earned the first points of the game on a pair of free throws by Nick Fromm just 52 seconds in and LCSC controlled the pace the rest of the first half.  Lewis-Clark State pushed the lead to double-digits on a three-pointer by Donte Archie with 9:40 left to play to give the Warriors the 22-11 lead.  The differential stayed about the same the rest of the way to halftime as LCSC took the 39-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Geoducks (1-6) fought back, using a 14-2 run to tie the game on a three-pointer by Peters with 14:47 left to play.  The score stayed close until just after the ten-minute mark as the Warriors slowly began to pull away.  The lead hit double-digits again with 6:39 left on the clock as Lewis-Clark State stayed undefeated on the year with the 78-63 win.

The Geoducks were paced by the 24 points from Peters, who connected on nine-of-11 attempts, including three-of-four from behind the arc.  Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) came off the bench to score 11 for the Geoducks.  Evergreen shot 41.5% on the game, making 22-of-53 attempts from the field.

Lewis-Clark State was led by 11 points off the bench from both Archie and Derrick Wofford.  Robert Ellis led the Warrior starters with 10 points on the night.  LCSC connected on 26-of-48 attempts for 54.2%.

The Geoducks are back in action again on Saturday night, traveling up to Seattle to take on Seattle Pacific. Tip with the Falcons is set for 7 pm at Brougham Pavilion.

No. 20 Eagles Escape Evergreen With 94-89 Double OT Win

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Junior Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) hit a three-pointer for the Evergreen Geoducks with less than ten seconds to go in regulation to force overtime but it was the 20th-ranked Northwest Eagles who escaped with the 94-89 double-overtime win in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Eagles (10-2, 1-0 CCC) built a solid lead early as they found themselves leading by double-digits with 6:41 left to go in the first half following a basket in the paint by Jeremy Paull.  Northwest continued to show why they were nationally ranked the remainder of the first half as they held a 32-20 lead at the break.  NU took advantage of nine Evergreen turnovers in the first half, scoring 18 points following Geoduck miscues.

In the second half, the Geoducks (1-5, 0-1 CCC) slowly began to chip away at the Northwest lead, pulling back within single-digits within the first two minutes.  The Eagles continued to hold off Evergreen as the half hit the midway point but the Geoducks weren’t done fighting.

Down 64-52 with 5:54 left to play, the Geoducks hit three-straight three-points to cut the gap to four at 65-61 with 4:20 left on the clock. A three-ball by Wagner with 2:17 left pulled the Geoducks within one and another Wagner long-ball with 51 seconds left put Evergreen up by one at 71-70.

With 16 seconds left in regulation, Ryan McIntosh hit a pair of free throws that put Northwest up by three at 76-74 but Wagner hit one from deep with just under 10 seconds left and the attempt at the buzzer by NU’s Michael Russo didn’t fall as the two teams ended the second half tied at 76.

The first overtime was much like the closing minutes of the second half as the teams battled back and forth.  Northwest’s Michael Greene went to the line with two seconds left and hit a pair of free throws that put the Eagles up by two at 83-81 but Evergreen’s Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) banked one in from the paint as the buzzer sounded to force a second overtime.

The Eagles finally finished their mission in the second overtime as they pounded the Geoducks down low, scoring six of their 11 points in the paint as Northwest escaped Olympia with the 94-89 win.

Evergreen was led by 23 points from Wagner, who played 43 minutes for the Geoducks.  Junior KJ Hong (Federal Way, Wash./Shoreline CC) had 20 points, including six-of-seven on free throws while Dickens finished with 14 points on the bench to go with a team-high eight rebounds.  The Geoducks shot 44.9% for the game, making 31 of 69 attempts, including 15 of 28 from behind the arc.

Northwest was led by a monster performance from Greene, who put up 32 points and 13 rebounds, also adding five assists in the win.  Russo added 26 points for the Eagles while Brett Skogstad came off the bench to score 11 on the night.  The Eagles controlled the glass on the night, finishing with 46 rebounds compared with 36 for Evergreen.

The Geoducks are back in action next Friday when they play host to Lewis-Clark State in a non-conference game.  Tip with the Warriors is set for 7 pm at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Geoducks Chop Down Loggers, 74-66, For Milestone Win

PARKLAND, Wash. –  Junior KJ Hong (Federal Way, Wash./Shoreline CC) went off for 25 points as the Evergreen Geoducks earned the 200th win in program history, knocking off the Puget Sound Loggers, 74-66, in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Olson Auditorium in Parkland, Wash.

The Geoducks (1-4) took the early lead as Hong hit his first six shots, including five from behind the arc, for 20 first half points.   Evergreen’s early lead hit double-digits with 11:25 to play on a free throw by junior Lucky Lagerberg (Olympia, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) that put the Geoducks up, 25-15.  The Loggers tightened the gap slightly before half but Evergreen still led, 35-28.

Evergreen continued to pressure UPS as the Geoduck lead hit 20 on a lay-up by Jakob Herron-Berentsen (Sacramento, Calif./Grays Harbor CC) with 11:49 left to go in the game.  The Geoducks pushed the lead to 27 with 9:20 left to play but the Loggers stormed back, pulling within nine on a Riggs Yarbo lay-up with 52 seconds left to play.

The Loggers fought back to get within six but Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) hit a pair of free throws with five second left to earn the 74-66 win.

Evergreen was led by 25 points from Hong, who was eight-of-nine from the field, including six-of-seven from behind the arc.  Wagner and freshman Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) each added 11 points while Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) brought down 11 rebounds for the Geoducks, who held a 51-50 advantage on the boards.

Puget Sound was led by 11 points each from Yarbro and Derek Jobe.  Rex Holmes added 10 points in the losing effort.  The Loggers were 24-of-77 from the field for 31.2%, including just three-for-30 from three-point range.

The Geoducks open up the Cascade Conference season next Saturday when they play host to Northwest.  Tip with the Eagles is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Lutes Earn 76-45 Win Over Geoducks

PARKLAND, Wash. – Senior forward Travis Wagner (Federal Way, Wash./Green River CC) put up 18 points but the Pacific Lutheran Lutes earned a 76-45 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at Olson Auditorium in Parkland, Wash.

The Lutes built a strong lead in the first half, holding an eight-point lead with 7:05 left to play in the opening period but the Geoducks fought back and kept the differential in single digits heading into halftime, 35-28.

The PLU lead continued to grow in the second half as the Lutes pushed their advantage to double-digits with 17:18 left to play and it never got better for Evergreen.  A 45-28 rebounding edge helped Pacific Lutheran earn the win on their home floor, earning a 76-45 win over the Geoducks.

Evergreen was led by 18 points from Wagner, who connected on seven-of-11 shots, including four baskets from behind the arc.  Wagner also added a pair of blocks on the night as the Geoducks recorded four rejections on the game.

Pacific Lutheran was led by 19 points and 10 rebounds from Cameron Schilling.  Andrew Earnest added 13 points in the win for the Lutes, who made 31 of 65 attempts for 47.7%.

The Geoducks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon  when they take on Puget Sound in a neutral site game, beginning at 4 p.m. at Olson Auditorium in Parkland, Wash.

Saint Martin’s Takes Battle of Olympia

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Saint Martin’s took advantage of 22 offensive rebounds and 25 Evergreen turnover en route to a 66-50 win over the Geoducks in a men’s basketball exhibition on Tuesday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Saints took the lead just 25 seconds into the game on a jumper by Evan Coulter and never looked back as SMU would lead the rest of the way.  The lead hit double-digits with 4:47 remaining as Rei Jensen took advantage of an offensive rebound following his own missed shot to put the Saints up 20-10.  Evergreen cut the lead down to six with 2:42 left but just one more shot would go in for either team the rest of the half as a Roger O’Neill jumper gave Saint Martin’s the 24-16 halftime lead.

Both teams warmed up their shooting arms in the second half as SMU pushed the lead to 20 with 11:37 remaining in the game.  The lead got as big as 23 but the Geoducks fought back to the very end, pulling back to 15 on a tip-in by Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) with 2:10 left to play.  The teams continued to trade baskets the rest of the way as Saint Martin’s earned the 66-50 win over the Geoducks.

Evergreen was led by another strong game from Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Edmonds CC), who earned the double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, also adding four blocks on the night.  Dickens came off the bench to score 10 in the loss for the Geoducks, who made 16-of-49 attempts for 32.7%.  The Geoducks had eight blocks on the night, compared with just two for the Saints.

Saint Martin’s was led by 13 points from Coulter, who also had eight rebounds on the night.  Lucas Shannon and Jensen each chalked up 11 points in the win.  SMU shot 34.2% on the night, making 25-of-73 attempts, including 24 points off turnovers.

The Geoducks will take a lengthy break before hitting the court again on Nov. 23 when they travel to Parkland, Wash. to take on Pacific Lutheran, beginning at 8 p.m. at Olson Auditorium on the PLU campus.
