Geoducks Squirt Past Corban, 65-62

OLYMPIA, Wash. – For just the fifth time in program history, the Evergreen Geoducks earned a win over the Corban Warriors, putting together a strong performance to earn a 65-56 victory in a Cascade Conference women’s basketball game on Monday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Warriors (3-10, 0-3 CCC) took the early lead, scoring the game’s first eight points.  The Geoducks (2-3, 2-0 CCC) fought back, taking the lead on a jumper by Brittnee Williams (Mukilteo, Wash./Edmonds CC) with 6:43 to go in the first half.  Evergreen continued to build the lead, taking a six-point advantage into the break at 33-27.

In the second half, the Geoducks pushed the lead to double-digits on another jumper by Williams with 17:45 left to play but Corban, the defending CCC regular season champions, didn’t back down, tying the game with 8:21 left to play. That would be the closest that the Warriors would get as the Geoducks dug deep and outscored Corban the rest of the way to earn the 65-56 win.

It was the first win for Evergreen over Corban since Jan. 23, 2010 when the Geoducks earned a 72-63 win in Olympia.

Evergreen was led by 15 points from Sammi Clark (Monroe, Wash./Edmonds CC), who also added six assists and five steals.  Sadee Jones (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS), Maddie Graves (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and Williams each finished with nine points for Evergreen.  As a team, the Geoducks held a 38-30 advantage on the glass.

Corban was led by 16 points from Tara Vanweerdhuizen.  Julia Young added 14 points off the bench while Emily Tsugawa put together 10 points to go with eight assists, also having eight turnovers on the night.

The Geoducks will look to stay undefeated in conference play on Tuesday night when they play host to Northwest Christian.  Tip with the Beacons is set for 5:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Wildcats Go Deep in 79-57 Win Over Geoducks

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A well-matched game early eventually got away from the Evergreen Geoducks as they fell to the Central Washington Wildcats, 79-57, in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Friday night at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.  The game was an exhibition for Evergreen and a counting game for Central Washington.

The score stayed early as the teams exchanged leads for much of the opening period.  Whit the scored tied at 23-23 with 3:06 left to play, the Wildcats went on an 8-0 run but the Geoducks fought back, pulling within four points at halftime, down 33-29.

Evergreen was led in the first half by nine points from junior Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS).  As a team, the Geoducks were 12-of-28 from the field for 42.9% as well at five-of-six from the charity stripe.

After Central pulled ahead by eight early in the second half, Evergreen fought back again, getting back within one point with 15:00 left to play.  The ‘Cats went back on the prowl, using a 10-0 run to push the lead into double-digits nearing the midpoint of the half.  CWU continued to push the lead as the game progressed, eventually earning the 79-57 win.

Swain led the way with 28 points on the game, including 19 in the second half.  Sophomore Sadee Jones (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS) added nine points in the losing effort.  The Geoducks outrebounded CWU, 42-30, on the game but made just 24-of-62 attempts for 38.7%.

Central Washington was led by 19 points from Jessica VanDyke.  Leslie Stillar added 16 points in the win while Shayla Ball finished with 11 points on the night.  The Wildcats were helped by 13-of-24 shooting from behind the arc, using the extra points to slip past the Geoducks.

The Geoducks resume Cascade Conference play on Monday evening when they play host to Corban.  Tip with the Warriors is set for 5:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

‘Cats Crush Geoducks, 100-59

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Playing their final non-conference game of the season, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t find their shot against the Central Washington Wildcats, falling 100-59, on Tuesday night at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.

The Wildcats set the hurried pace early and the scoreboard showed that as CWU built a double-digit lead on a jumper by Derrick Davis that put the ‘Cats up, 20-9, with 13:23 to play in the opening period.  UW transfer Mark McLaughlin converted on an and-one opportunity with 8:08 left to play that put Central up, 34-14.

Central continued to extend the lead, pulling ahead by 27 at halftime at 49-22.  The Geoducks had some great looks in the first half but could only convert on eight of 29 attempts for 27.6%.  On the other end of the court, the ‘Cats didn’t have a similar problem, making 19-of-40 attempts for 47.5%.

The trend continued into the second half as Evergreen’s shots struggled to fall as the Geoducks began to run out of time to mount a comeback.    The Wildcats continued to hit their shots as the lead continued to grow, hitting 40 with just under six minutes left to play.  CWU would cruise the rest of the way, earning the 100-59 win.

Evergreen was led by 15 points from Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon).  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho./Edmonds CC) added 10 points while Jakob Herron-Berentsen (Sacramento, Calif./Grays Harbor CC) brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Central Washington was led by 21 points from McLaughlin.  Jordan Coby added 15 points off the bench while Chris Holmes chalked up 13 points in the win.  Davis wrapped up the ‘Cats in double-digits, posting 12 points on the night.

The Geoducks will now turn their focus back to the Cascade Conference schedule, playing host to Corban next Monday.  Tip with the Warriors is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

No. 8 Falcons Fly Past Geoducks, 80-45

SEATTLE – Playing a team ranked in the top-ten nationally for the second straight night, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t earn the upset as the eighth-ranked Seattle Pacific Falcons earned the 80-45 win on Saturday evening at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.

Seattle Pacific (8-1) got off to the quick start, pushing the lead into double-digits just over five minutes into the game on a jumper by Cory Hutsen that gave SPU the 14-4 lead.  The Geoducks (1-7) found their shot at the Falcons cooled a bit but SPU continued to stay warm from behind the arc as the lead continued to grow.

The advantage hit 20 points for the Falcons with a little over five minutes to go in the first half as Alex Weber-Brader made a layup to give Seattle Pacific the 34-14 lead.  The differential would hover around 20 for the remainder of the period as SPU took the 40-20 lead into the break.

The Falcons continued to fly away in the second half as the lead approached 30 around the midpoint of the half.  The Geoducks continued to battle , improving their shooting percentage to X in the second half but it wasn’t enough to close the gap, falling 80-45.

Evergreen was led by 15 points off the bench from senior Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC).  Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) scored nine for the green and white, one night after posting 24 points against Lewis-Clark State.  The Geoducks made 16-of-48 attempts on the night, including identical 8-of-24 in each half, for 33.3%.

Seattle Pacific was led by 14 points from David Downs.  Jobi Wall added 13 points while Gonzaga transfer Andy Poling finished with 12.  Weber-Brader led the SPU bench with 10 points on the night.  The Falcons shot 45.9% on the night, making 28-of-61 attempts.

The Geoducks wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they head across to mountains to take on Central Washington.  Tip with the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash.

No. 10 Warriors Battle Past Geoducks, 78-63

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Evergreen junior Cody Peters (Coupeville, Wash./Western Oregon Univ.) put up 24 points but it wasn’t enough as the 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors earned a 78-63 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The  Warriors (11-0) earned the first points of the game on a pair of free throws by Nick Fromm just 52 seconds in and LCSC controlled the pace the rest of the first half.  Lewis-Clark State pushed the lead to double-digits on a three-pointer by Donte Archie with 9:40 left to play to give the Warriors the 22-11 lead.  The differential stayed about the same the rest of the way to halftime as LCSC took the 39-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Geoducks (1-6) fought back, using a 14-2 run to tie the game on a three-pointer by Peters with 14:47 left to play.  The score stayed close until just after the ten-minute mark as the Warriors slowly began to pull away.  The lead hit double-digits again with 6:39 left on the clock as Lewis-Clark State stayed undefeated on the year with the 78-63 win.

The Geoducks were paced by the 24 points from Peters, who connected on nine-of-11 attempts, including three-of-four from behind the arc.  Elzie Dickens (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC) came off the bench to score 11 for the Geoducks.  Evergreen shot 41.5% on the game, making 22-of-53 attempts from the field.

Lewis-Clark State was led by 11 points off the bench from both Archie and Derrick Wofford.  Robert Ellis led the Warrior starters with 10 points on the night.  LCSC connected on 26-of-48 attempts for 54.2%.

The Geoducks are back in action again on Saturday night, traveling up to Seattle to take on Seattle Pacific. Tip with the Falcons is set for 7 pm at Brougham Pavilion.
