Evergreen Runs Well at Beaver Classic

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Running for the final time before the 2012 Cascade Conference Championships, the Evergreen Geoducks put together a strong performance at the Beaver Classic on Friday evening at Avery Park in Corvallis, Ore.

The Geoduck women were led by freshman Jamie Cummins (Lopez Island, Wash./Lopez HS), who took 45th with a time of 23:52 over the six-kilometer course.  Senior Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) took 96th, running an even 30:00 on the race.  Lindsay Allen of Nike Oregon won the race with a time of 21:36 while the University of Victoria took the team title with 22 points to finish 39 points ahead of University of Portland.

On the men’s side, Evergreen was led yet again by sophomore Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS), who finished 95th with a time of 27:48.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 105th with a mark of 28:14 while brother Wes Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) finished in 124th with a time of 29:15.  Zephyr Forest (Fairfax, Calif./Sir Francis Drake HS) took 142nd in a time of 32:44 while Drew Hawley (SeaTac, Wash./Mt. Rainier HS) was next across the line, taking 143rd in a time of 33:00.

As a team, the Geoduck men took 14th.  The eight-kilometer race was won by Matthew Clowes in a time of 24:22.  University of Victoria earned the men’s title as well, securing 34 points to finish 13 points ahead of second-place Southern Oregon.

Evergreen will have next weekend off before heading back down to Oregon on Nov. 3 for the 2012 Cascade Conference Championships, hosted by Warner Pacific College.

Geoducks Test Out CCC Championship Course

PORTLAND, Ore. – Getting a preview of the course for the 2012 Cascade Conference Championships, the Evergreen Geoducks took part in the CCC Preview Meet as part of the Warner Pacific College Open on Saturday at Lents Park in Portland, Ore.

On the men’s side, the Geoducks took 11th as a team.  Evergreen was led for a fourth straight meet by sophomore Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS), who took 77th with a time of 27:46.58.  Alec Messman (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) was the next Geoduck across the line, taking 90th overall with a time of 28:43.55.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 93rd, finishing the course in 28:52.12 and twin broth Wes Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 103rd with a time of 29:38.93.  Drew Hawley (SeaTac, Wash./Mt. Rainier HS) rounded out the Evergreen effort, taking 113th with a time of 32:54.18.

The men’s race was won by Eric Avila of Southern Oregon, finishing the eight kilometer course in 24:32.51 to win by nearly five seconds.  Southern Oregon also won the team title with a score of 34 points, beating NCAA Division I University of Portland by 38 points.

On the women’s side, Evergreen was led by senior Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS), who took 84th with a time of 23:51.11.  Allison Zoe Schneider (Longview, Wash./R.A. Long HS) finished 90th with a time of 29:05.51 as just two Geoduck females raced on Saturday.  The women’s 5k was won by Merel van Steenbergen of University of Portland.   The Pilots also won the team title with 56 points, just seven points ahead of second-place Northwest Christian.

The Geoducks return to Oregon on Friday to take part in a rare afternoon race as they compete in the Beaver Classic in Corvallis, Ore., hosted by Oregon State University.

Evergreen Quintet Runs at Bowles Invitational

SALEM, Ore. – Taking part in one of the biggest meets in the Pacific Northwest, the Evergreen Geoducks sent five runners to the 38th annual Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University and contested at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.

On the men’s side, Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS) led the way for the third straight meet, taking 167th place with a time of 28:05.90, just 45 one-hundredths of a second behind Calvin Edward of Eastern Oregon.

Alec Messman (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) was the next Geoduck across the line, taking 200th overall with a time of 29:13.99.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 224th with a time of 30:53.69 while Drew Hawley (SeaTac, Wash./Mt. Rainier HS) rounded out the Evergreen men with a time of 33:03.47 to finish 240th.

The Gold race was won by Matthew Clowes, running unattached, with a time of 24:09.43. University of British Columbia and Concordia (Ore.) tied for first place, each finishing with 91 points on the meet.

On the women’s side, Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) was the only Geoduck to compete, taking 189th place with a time of 25:09.62.  Kimber Mattox took first individually, finishing in a time of 17:17.99. British Columbia took the women’s title with 64 points, edging out Everett Community College, who finished with 83.

In the Cardinal races, Lars Erik Malde took first in the men’s 8k with a time of 24:49.08 as his Portland Pilots also earned the men’s title with just 16 points, nearly 100 points better than second-place Boise State.  Amber Rozcicha of Portland State won the women’s 5k with a time of 17:46.70 while it was Oregon State taking the women’s team title with 28 points.

Evergreen will take a two-week break before their next meet.  On Oct. 13, the Geoducks will head back down to Oregon to take part in the Cascade Conference Preview Meet, hosted by Warner Pacific College in Portland, Ore.

Geoducks Run at Saint Martin’s Invite

LACEY, Wash. – Led by sophomore Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS), the Evergreen Geoducks made the short trip to Lacey, Wash. to take part in the Saint Martin’s Invitational on Saturday morning on the campus of Saint Martin’s University.

Jones finished the primarily NCAA Division II race in 49th place, just behind Isaac Lammers of Alaska Fairbanks.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) was the next Geoduck across the line, taking 59th with a time of 29:47.30.  Alec Messman (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) took 60th in his hometown, finished the eight-kilometer course in 29:56.59.

Ryan Cassidy of University of Victoria won the men’s race with a time of 25:40.75, holding off teammate Forrest Simpson by nearly five seconds.

On the women’s side, Jamie Cummins (Lopez Island, Wash./Lopez Island HS) took 29th in the six-kilometer race, securing a time of 25:17.14.  Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) took 48th to open up her season with a time of 31:18.14 while Allison Zoe Schneider (Longview, Wash./R.A. Long HS) took 50th with a time of 34:20.74.

Ruth Perkins of Club Northwest won the women’s race with a time of 22:07.39.

The Geoducks will head to Salem, Ore. next weekend as they take part in the Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University.

Jones and Jones Open Up Geoduck XC Season

WEST SEATTLE, Wash. – Under sunny, dry conditions a small contingent of Geoducks faced the cross country world at the Sundodger Invite. Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mount Tahoma HS) and Aaron Jones  (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS) led the Geoducks off the line, with Les taking a far more aggressive start (5:01, first mile) than Aaron (5:35). Les’s lead over Aaron would grow through two miles (10:36 to 11:12), before Aaron slowly chipped away with steady 5:45 miles over the last three miles. Closing to within 10m with 400m to go, Aaron was unable to catch him as Les stormed away to finish in 28:12, just ahead of Aaron (28:19). Les finished 166th and Aaron 172nd in the field of 236 runners.
