Four Scores and a Geoduck Win Over Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Taking the lead just 27 seconds into the game, the Evergreen Geoducks picked up a 4-0 win over the Northwest Eagles in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer game on Saturday at NU Soccer Field in Kirkland, Wash.

Junior Jack Fortune (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS) gave the Geoducks the lead in the opening minute after sending in a ball from 25 yards out that bounced over the head of Northwest keeper Jonny Wong.  Evergreen continued to pressure the goal over the next 44 minutes but the lead remained just 1-0 at half.

In the second half, the Geoducks blew the game open, beginning with a successful penalty kick by Mirza Memic (Bellevue, Wash./Whatcom CC) in the 50th minute.  Kevin Flavin (Oak Harbor, Wash./Shoreline CC) made in 3-0 in the 60th minute after dribbling up the left side and beating the Northwest defense before firing in a ball from 15 yards out for the score.

Memic earned the brace, his second of the season, in the 75th minute after George Bundy (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw HS) sent in a floating free kick and Memic put a head on it for the 4-0 Geoduck advantage.

While the Evergreen offense was having a great game at one end of the field, Geoduck keeper Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) earned the shutout at the other end, making five saves in his season debut.

Evergreen returns to Olympia on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Northwest Christian to wrap up the first half of conference play.  Kick with the Beacons is set for 2 p.m. at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

#25 Cavs Shutout Geoducks, 2-0, in First-Place Battle

PORTLAND, Ore. – With first place in the Cascade Conference on the line, it was the 25th-ranked Concordia Cavaliers who reigned victorious, defeating the Evergreen Geoducks, 2-0, in a CCC men’s soccer match on Tuesday evening at Hilken Community Stadium in Portland, Ore.

The Cavaliers got on the board in the 21st minute as Septi Danciu fed in a ball to the far post, allowing Sam Carmichael to finish the play for the goal.  Evergreen continued to fight for the remainder of the period as the Geoducks trailed by just one heading into the break.

Concordia doubled the lead in the 52nd minute as Gerrit Hamann corralled the ball as it bounced around the box, putting it past Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) for the score.  Both teams kept pressing on offense but neither squad would manage a score the rest of the way as CU earned the win.

Concordia held a 15-7 advantage on shots, also earning six corners, compared with just two for the Geoducks.  Harlow, the defending CCC Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves for the green and white while Arne Niermann made a pair of saves to collect the shutout for the Cavs.

Despite the loss, the Geoducks remain in sole possession of second place in the conference standings after Warner Pacific defeated Northwest, 1-0, earlier in the day.

Evergreen will look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon when they head north to take on Northwest in a match scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Kirkland, Wash.

Spurr, Harlow Repeat as Red Lion CCC Players of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After going five years without earning a men’s soccer conference player of the week, the Geoducks only had to wait one week to pick up two more as freshman forward Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) and junior goalkeeper Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) repeated as Red Lion Cascade Conference Players of the Week following another outstanding week on the pitch as Evergreen stayed undefeated in Cascade Conference play.

Spurr earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in a row after repeating his three goal performance of a week ago with a pair of scores in a 3-1 win over Corban and the equalizer in a 2-1 win at Warner Pacific.  His six goals this season tie him with Septi Danciu of Concordia for the conference lead while his 2.0 points per match have him in sole possession of the CCC lead.

Harlow was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week after allowing just two goals in 180 minutes while making 13 saves on the week.  His 0.75 GAA is nearly one-half goal ahead of the next best in the conference while his .864 save percentage is also tips in the CCC.

Evergreen will take their undefeated conference record back on the road on Tuesday when they play Concordia for sole possession of first place in the conference table.  First kick with the Cavaliers is set for 6 p.m. in Portland, Ore.

Geoducks Take Fourth Straight With 2-1 Win at Warner Pacific

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Playing on the road for the first time in 2012, the Evergreen Geoducks found a way to win for the fourth straight match, defeating the Warner Pacific Knights, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday at David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore.

The Geoducks (4-3-0, 4-0-0 CCC) fell behind almost immediately as the Knights (3-5-0, 2-2-0 CCC) scored a second minute goal following the corner kick by Almir Celebic that was put in from point blank by Alberto Casas.

Evergreen evened things up in the 27th minute as freshman phenom Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) did it yet again, scoring his sixth goal of the year on the assist by Joseph Ademofe (Ifon, Nigeria/Shoreline CC) to even things up at 1-1.

With just two minutes left in the first half, the Geoducks took their first lead of the match following a bit of miscommunication by the Knights as a WPC defender attempted to pass the ball back to the keeper but instead put the ball into the net for an own goal.

Both teams had opportunities in the second half as the teams combined for seven shots on goal in the second half but neither would score again as Evergreen moved to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since joining the Cascade Conference.

Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) won his fourth straight match as well, making five saves to finish a strong week in goal.

First place will be on the line on Tuesday when Evergreen heads back down to Portland to face off against Concordia (Ore.) beginning at 6 p.m. at Hilken Community Stadium.

Evergreen Moves to 3-0 in CCC with 3-1 Win Over Corban

OLYMPIA, Wash. – As the sun began to set behind the trees, the Evergreen Geoducks celebrated their third-straight win after defeating the Corban Warriors, 3-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Wednesday evening at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (3-3-0, 3-0-0 CCC) got on the board in the 16th minute when freshman Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) backed up his recent Red Lion CCC Offensive Player of the Week award by juking around a defender for Corban (2-3-2, 1-2-0 CCC) before firing it past Nash Yumauchi for the 1-0 lead.

Spurr nearly scored his fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute as his shot fell at the feet of a Warrior defender, who lost control of the ball as it trickled into the net for an own goal and a 2-0 Evergreen lead heading into halftime.

The Warriors narrowed the gap to just one goal in the 48th minute as Antonio Walker gathered the save from Evergreen’s Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) following a Tyler Hagen shot and Walker scored from five yards out for his second of the season.

Evergreen put the nail in the coffin in the 57th minute as junior captain Brady Espinoza (Pasco, Wash./Walla Walla CC) lined up a free kick from about 30 yards out and put the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season, all coming on set pieces, as the Geoducks earned the 3-1 win.

With the win, Evergreen moves to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2005 as they sit tied atop the table with Concordia and Northwest, who also were victorious on Wednesday.

Corban outshot Evergreen, 16 to 11, on the match and had seven corner kicks but Harlow proved too strong in net, making eight saves to give the Geoducks the win.  Yamauchi finished with two saves for the Warriors, playing all 90 minutes in net.
