This Week in Geoduck Athletics

While clocks may be turning back on Sunday morning (friendly reminder), the Geoducks continue to move ahead as both men’s and women’s soccer, as well as volleyball, are still in playoff contention and the men’s and women’s basketball teams prepare for a busy November!

Men’s Basketball
After going 1-1 in Kamloops, British Columbia last weekend, the Geoduck men’s basketball team has the weekend off from competition before making the short trek to Lacey on Tuesday to take on Thurston County rival Saint Martin’s in an exhibition contest.  Tip with the Saints is set for 7:30 p.m. at Marcus Pavilion, following the conclusion of the exhibition game between the Geoducks and Saints women’s teams.

Women’s Basketball
The Geoducks continue to prep for the 2013-14 season and will finally get a game-day atmosphere on Tuesday when they head over to rival Saint Martin’s for a exhibition as part of a women/men doubleheader at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey.  The Evergreen women are set to tip at 5:15 p.m. against the Saints, who are picked to finish eighth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this season.

Men’s Soccer
The Evergreen men’s soccer team is on the road for the rest of the 2013 season but the Geoducks find themselves in a strong position to make the Cascade Conference tournament for the second straight season.  This weekend, the Geoducks head to Kirkland to take on in-state rival Northwest, beginning at 1 p.m. on the NU campus.

Women’s Soccer
Geoduck women’s soccer plays their final two home games of the season this week as they host Southern Oregon on Thursday (It should be a spooktacular match) and Oregon Tech on Saturday.  On Thursday, the Geoducks invite all fans to show up in their most scary, or silly, Halloween costumes as the green and white look for an important win against the Raiders.  Saturday is both Senior Day and Breast Cancer Awareness day as fans are invited to trade in their green for pink as Evergreen honors their seniors before the game.

Volleyball
Currently tied for seventh place, the Geoducks will look to keep their playoff hopes alive as they visit Northwest Christian on Friday night and Corban on Saturday.  Both matches are very important for the green and white and both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.

Geoduck Gallop
Runners looking for something to do on Feb. 1 can stop their search as the Geoducks are proud to announce the annual Geoduck Gallop 10k/Half-Marathon will take place beginning at 9 a.m.  For more information, including how to register, visit the Geoduck Gallop page here.

Cavs Come Back To Beat Geoducks, 2-1

PORTLAND, Wash. – Playing under clear skies, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t hold on for the win as they fell to the Concordia Cavaliers, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Tuesday evening in Portland, Ore.

The Geoducks (7-6-3, 5-5-2 CCC) opened up the scoring in the 35th minute as Alberto Brand (Seattle, Wash./University HS/Highline CC) took a pass from Albert Anabtawi (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower HS) and Brand shot on the hop, firing the ball past Arne Niermann for the 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers (12-4-0, 8-3-0 CCC) evened it up shortly before halftime.  Following a foul in the box that was called on Evergreen, Septi Danciu went lower left on a penalty kick in the 44th minute to tie the game a 1-1 with his 13th goal of the season.

Concordia broke the tie in the 72nd minute as Danciu fed in a ball to Radcliffe McDougald, who used his left foot from 16 yards out to sneak the ball past Evergreen keeper Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC) for the 2-1 lead and eventual win.

It was the Cavaliers who held an 18-7 shot advantage but Sanchez was strong in net, making seven saves for the Geoducks.  Niermann finished with one save for the Cavaliers.

The Geoducks return to action on Saturday when they visit in-state rival Northwest.  First kick with the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. in Kirkland, Wash.

Seniors Shine in Geoducks 3-1 Win Over Oregon Tech

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Three goals by three seniors propelled the Evergreen Geoducks to a 3-1 senior day win over the visiting Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (7-5-3, 5-4-2 CCC) went on the offensive from the very beginning as Evergreen held a 15-2 shot advantage in the first half but it wasn’t until the 32nd minute that Oregon Tech (5-9-0, 4-6-0 CCC) allowed a goal as Greg Wolfe (Oak Harbor,Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Shoreline CC) dribbled around the defense before scoring his second goal of the year.

Evergreen made it 2-0 in the 40th minute as Joseph Ademofe (Ifon, Nigeria/Shoreline CC) gathered a clear in the air following a corner kick and fired a bullet from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the goal.

In the second half, a pair of four-year letterwinners teamed up in the 61st minute as Jack Fortune (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS) had a shot go off the right post to the feet of Dyson Fowler (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si HS), who took advantage of the keeper out of position for his second goal of the season.

Oregon Tech didn’t give up and it paid off in the 79th minute as Ashton Betts got past the Evergreen back line and sent in a nice cross to the middle of the box, allowing Nathan Wade to finish from about six yards out for his fourth goal of the year.

Seniors Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC) and Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS/Shoreline CC) split time in net, combining for four saves.  Loren Jessen was sold in net for Oregon Tech, making eight saves on 34 total Evergreen shots.

The Geoducks will be on the road for the rest of the season, beginning on Tuesday evening as they take on Concordia.  First kick with the Cavaliers is set for 6 p.m. in Portland, Ore.

Geoducks Blank Yotes, 3-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Opening up their final home stand of the 2013 season, the Evergreen Geoducks earned a crucial victory, shutting out the College of Idaho Coyotes, 3-0, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (6-5-3, 4-4-2 CCC) opened up the scoring in the 14th minute as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) had a shot deflected to the feet of Ethan Sumlin (Littleton, Colo./Littleton HS), who put it past Colin Benham-Marin for his second goal of the season and the 1-0 lead over the Yotes (4-10-0, 4-6-0 CCC)

Spurr earned another assist in the 28th minute, this time feeding a ball to senior Brice Boum (Doula, Cameroon/College Cite’ Vienlle/Edmonds CC) and Boum lowered the boom for his first goal of the year and the 2-0 Geoduck lead.

Senior Dyson Fowler (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si HS) scored his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute, using some fancy footwork to deke a pair of Yote defenders before shooting from about seven yards out for the 3-0 lead as the Geoducks moved into fourth place in the CCC standings with the win.

Evergreen outshot College of Idaho, 16-9, on the match but the Yotes held a 7-1 advantage on corners, putting pressure on the Geoduck defense.  Keeper Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC) made three saves to preserve the shutout while Benham-Marin made five saves for the Yotes.

The Geoducks wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon as they play Oregon Tech, beginning at 1 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch.  Prior to the match, Evergreen will take a few moments to honor their 2013 seniors before kicking off with the Owls.

This Week In Geoduck Athletics

Last weekend was a great one for the Geoducks as they look to continue the strong play this week, both domestically and abroad!

Men’s Basketball
After beating the alumni for the first time in many years, the 2013-14 Geoduck men’s basketball team heads up to Kamloops, B.C. and Thompson Rivers University for the first two games of the season.  Evergreen faces off against UBC-Okanagan on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. before taking on the host Wolfpack on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Men’s Soccer
The Geoduck men continue their push towards the postseason this week as they play their final two home games of the season on Evergreen Pitch (Field #4). Evergreen hosts College of Idaho on Friday afternoon (3 p.m.) and fans will have a chance to win free Chipotle coupons during the “Frizbee Toss Challenge.”  On Saturday, the Geoducks honor their seniors prior to a 1 p.m. kick with Oregon Tech and the green and white will be joined by the musical stylings of Olympi a’s own Artesians Arkestra, who will perform at various times during the match.

Women’s Soccer
The Geoduck women hit the road this weekend, making the short trip down I-5 to Portland for a pair of matches in the Rose City.  Evergreen take on the top team in the nation on Thursday when they visit Concordia for a 7 p.m. start and then the Geoducks return to Portland on Saturday for a 6 p.m. kick at Warner Pacific.

Volleyball
Evergreen returns to newly-dedicated Costantino Recreation Center Gymnasium this weekend as they host Oregon Tech on Friday night and Southern Oregon on Saturday.  Both matches are at 7 p.m. and YOUR Geoducks could use some fan support as they try to climb into the playoff picture for the first time since 2003.
