Bundy Named Red Lion CCC Defensive Player of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After helping lead the Geoducks to a pair of shutout victories at home against Warner Pacific and on the road at Oregon Tech, senior midfielder George Bundy (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw HS) has been named Red Lion Cascade Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Bundy, a staple for the Geoducks this season, played 175 of 180 minutes for the green and white.  In addition to playing stopper in the middle third, he also had an assist in the first goal of a 2-0 win over Warner Pacific last Wednesday.

The Geoducks, who have already secured second place in the conference standings, wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon against Northwest, beginning at 1 p.m.  Evergreen then opens up the postseason on Nov. 6 with a home game against the third-seed, also at 1 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

Geoducks Continue Winning Ways at Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Ethan Sumlin (Centennial, Colo./Littleton HS)  scored in the first minute of the second half and Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) put one in in the final minute of the match as the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 2-0 win over the Oregon Tech Owls in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Trevor Derrah Field in Klamath Falls, Ore.

After a scoreless first half, it was Sumlin who opened up the scoring after picking up a rebound and firing it into the center of the net from about 15 yards out.  The Geoducks continued to put pressure on the Owls defense but it wasn’t until the final minute that Evergreen would score again.

After OIT brought the keeper up to the offensive half of the field, Spurr put in a shot with just one second left on the clock for his eighth goal of the year and a 2-0 win for the green and white.

Keepers Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) and Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) split time in net, combining for four saves and the shutout.  Loren Jessen played nearly all 90 minutes for the Owls, making nine saves but allowing the two goals, after coming in six seconds in for senior Tanner Lee, who earned the start in his final home appearance.

The Geoducks return home next Saturday for their regular season finale when they play host to in-state rival Northwest, beginning at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

Flavin Pair Sends Geoducks Past Knights, 2-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Senior Kevin Flavin (Oak Harbor, Wash./Shoreline CC) used some fancy footwork to score a pair of unassisted goals as the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 2-0 win over the Warner Pacific Knights in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (10-5-0, 10-2-0 CCC) got on the board for the first time in the 27th minute after Flavin dribbled around Warner Pacific (6-8-2, 5-5-2 CCC) keeper Drew Bonifacio and finished on an empty net for his third goal of the season.

Warner Pacific nearly tied it up in the 37th minute when Almir Celebic lined up for a penalty kick by Geoduck keeper Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) guessed right, diving left to make the save as Evergreen held the 1-0 lead at half.

Flavin did it again in the 80th minute, dribbling from midfield and around several WPC defenders before crossing up Bonifacio for a second time and putting the ball into the empty net for his second of the game and his fourth goal of the season.

Despite allowing the two goals, Bonifacio was strong in net, making seven saves for the Knights.  Sanchez also had a strong match, making five saves to collect his fourth shutout of the season.

With the win, the Geoducks clinch a home playoff date to open the 2012 Cascade Conference tournament on Nov. 6.  Evergreen also set a new school record for conference wins in a season with their 10th CCC victory of the year.

The Geoducks hit the road for the final time in the regular season when they head down to Klamath Falls, Ore. on Saturday to take on Oregon Tech.  The match with the Owls was moved up earlier today to 1 p.m. as inclement weather is expected to hit the Klamath Falls region this weekend.

Roland, Espinoza Named Red Lion CCC Players of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After helping the Evergreen Geoducks secure their first men’s soccer postseason berth since 2005, juniors Jeff Roland (Tacoma, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) and Brady Espinoza (Pasco, Wash./Walla Walla CC) have been named Red Lion Cascade Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Roland earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three of the Geoducks’ four goals last week as the green and white earned wins on the road at Northwest Christian, 3-0, and Corban, 1-0.  Roland’s game-winning goal at Corban came with just 11 seconds left on a one-timer following an attempted clear by a Corban defender.

Espinoza earned Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Geoduck back line that didn’t allow a goal in 180 minutes played, all of which Brady was on the pitch.  Evergreen now has six shutouts on the season and he is a large reason why.

The Geoducks look to earn a home game in the Cascade Conference tournament on Wednesday afternoon when they host Warner Pacific.  With a win, Evergreen can finish no lower than second, which would have them opening the conference tournament on Nov. 6 at home.
