PORTLAND, Ore. – After giving up a goal in the second minute, the Evergreen Geoducks put two goal on the board as they defeated the Warner Pacific Knights, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore.

The Knights (1-13-0, 0-8-0 CCC) got on the board first as Anna Blakeslee fed in a cross to the front of the goal and Molly Klinkhammer shot it past Evergreen (2-10-1, 2-6-0 CCC) keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) for the 1-0 advantage just 1:53 into the game.

Evergreen scored the equalizer in the 24th minute after Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) put in a cross to the far post and Leah Aragon (Colorado Springs, Colo./UC-Colorado Springs) tapped it in for her first goal of the year.

Less than 90 seconds before halftime, the Geoducks went ahead as Shani Ramento (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) sent in a free kick from 30 yards out into the goal as Evergreen took the 2-1 lead into the break.

After Evergreen outshot WPC, 9-4, in the first half, both teams managed four shots in the second half but both goalies did their jobs as Evergreen collected the 2-1 victory, their second win in a row.

MacKenzie earned the win for the Geoducks, making two saves on the match.  WPC keeper Lynzee Felder was kept busy, making six saves and allowing the two Evergreen goals in the loss.

The Geoducks wrap up the 2012 campaign on Sunday afternoon when they return to Portland to take on third-ranked Concordia in the CCC regular season finale for both schools.  First kick with the Cavs is set for 2 p.m.

Flavin Pair Sends Geoducks Past Knights, 2-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Senior Kevin Flavin (Oak Harbor, Wash./Shoreline CC) used some fancy footwork to score a pair of unassisted goals as the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 2-0 win over the Warner Pacific Knights in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (10-5-0, 10-2-0 CCC) got on the board for the first time in the 27th minute after Flavin dribbled around Warner Pacific (6-8-2, 5-5-2 CCC) keeper Drew Bonifacio and finished on an empty net for his third goal of the season.

Warner Pacific nearly tied it up in the 37th minute when Almir Celebic lined up for a penalty kick by Geoduck keeper Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) guessed right, diving left to make the save as Evergreen held the 1-0 lead at half.

Flavin did it again in the 80th minute, dribbling from midfield and around several WPC defenders before crossing up Bonifacio for a second time and putting the ball into the empty net for his second of the game and his fourth goal of the season.

Despite allowing the two goals, Bonifacio was strong in net, making seven saves for the Knights.  Sanchez also had a strong match, making five saves to collect his fourth shutout of the season.

With the win, the Geoducks clinch a home playoff date to open the 2012 Cascade Conference tournament on Nov. 6.  Evergreen also set a new school record for conference wins in a season with their 10th CCC victory of the year.

Roland, Espinoza Named Red Lion CCC Players of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After helping the Evergreen Geoducks secure their first men’s soccer postseason berth since 2005, juniors Jeff Roland (Tacoma, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) and Brady Espinoza (Pasco, Wash./Walla Walla CC) have been named Red Lion Cascade Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Roland earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three of the Geoducks’ four goals last week as the green and white earned wins on the road at Northwest Christian, 3-0, and Corban, 1-0.  Roland’s game-winning goal at Corban came with just 11 seconds left on a one-timer following an attempted clear by a Corban defender.

Espinoza earned Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Geoduck back line that didn’t allow a goal in 180 minutes played, all of which Brady was on the pitch.  Evergreen now has six shutouts on the season and he is a large reason why.

The Geoducks look to earn a home game in the Cascade Conference tournament on Wednesday afternoon when they host Warner Pacific.  With a win, Evergreen can finish no lower than second, which would have them opening the conference tournament on Nov. 6 at home.

Roland Rolls Geoducks Past Warriors, 1-0

SALEM, Ore. – With just 11 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Jeff Roland (Tacoma, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) put in the game-winner as the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 1-0 win over the Corban Warriors in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore.

The game-winner came at the 89:49 mark as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) sent in a corner kick in the closing seconds and Roland one-timed  the attempted clearance from about 35 yards out, sneaking the ball into the upper-right corner for his third goal of the week and fourth of the season.

The Warriors dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Geoducks, 22-5, on the match but junior Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) was a wall in goal, making six saves to collect the shutout.

With the win, the Geoducks clinch a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2005.  Evergreen also tied the school record for most conference wins in a season with nine, which was coincidently last achieved in 2005.

The Geoducks return home on Wednesday when they take on Warner Pacific on Evergreen Pitch, beginning at 3 p.m.
