Eagles Hold Off Geoducks, 3-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Northwest goalkeeper Joe Galbraith made 10 saves and the Eagles made the most of their offensive opportunities as NU earned a 3-1 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Eagles (7-4-0, 5-2-0 CCC) struck first in the 11th minute as Alex Taylor sent a pass up from deep in Northwest territory  and Todd Siedenburg caught Evergreen (4-5-2, 2-4-1 CCC) keeper Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS/Shoreline CC) playing up, chipping the ball over Harlow’s head and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Northwest made it 2-0 in the 20th minute as Josh Guerrero dribbled around two Evergreen defenders before taking a shot from five yards out for his seventh goal of the season.  The Geoducks cut the deficit in half just a few minutes before halftime as Ethan Sumlin (Littleton, Colo./Littleton HS) fed a ball from the middle to Jacob Zimmerman (Olympia, Wash./Capital HS) on the left and Zimmerman chipped it over Galbraith for his first collegiate goal.

Evergreen  put the offensive pressure on Northwest in the second half, outshooting the Eagles, 16-3, in the final 45 minutes but the Eagles defense stayed tough, including seven saves from Galbraith.  NU’s offense also helped out in the 62nd minute as Edgar Esquivel passed in a ball to Jonathan Ellis, who took an opportunity near the top of the box and scored an insurance goal to give the visitors the 3-1 win.

The Geoducks finished with a 22-12 advantage on shots.  The match saw four cautions, including three for Northwest.

Evergreen returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting 24th-ranked Corban beginning at 4 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch.

Warriors Shutout Geoducks, 4-0

SALEM, Ore. – Audrey Sullivan scored twice and assisted on two more as the Corban Warriors defended their home field against the Evergreen Geoducks, 4-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Thursday afternoon at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore.

The Warriors (6-5-1, 2-1-0 CCC) got on the board in just the third minute as Tera McDonough sent in a cross to Sullivan, who tapped it over Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) to put the Geoducks (1-6-0, 0-2-0 CCC) behind, 1-0.  Less than 10 minutes later, Corban struck again as Sullivan crossed a pass in to Randi Donahue, who scored her second goal of the season to give the Warriors a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Geoduck defense held strong for much of the second half but the Warriors managed two goal in the final 10 minutes as Sullivan scored her ninth goal of the year in the 82nd minute and then assisted McDonough in the 84th minute for the 4-0 victory.

Corban outshot the Geoducks, 18-13, on the afternoon but Evergreen had an 8-7 advantage in the second half.  MacKenzie made three saves for the Geoducks while Alexis Beattie made two saves to collect the shutout for Corban.

Evergreen is back in action on Saturday evening when they travel to Springfield, Ore. to take on Northwest Christian.  First kick with the Beacons is set for 6 p.m. at Mike Kelly Field.

This Week In Geoduck Athletics

Greeners don’t have far to go to cheer on the Geoducks this week as men’s soccer and volleyball are both at home and cross country isn’t far away.

Cross Country
After three weeks without racing, the Geoducks return to competition this weekend at the PLU Invitational in Parkland.  The women’s race is set to begin at 10 am, followed by the men at 11 am.

Men’s Soccer
Evergreen’s lone match takes place this Saturday as the Geoducks host in-state rival Northwest, beginning at 1 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch (Field #4). Saturday afternoon’s match supports local youth clubs in our Little Kickers Day,

Women’s Soccer
The Geoducks women’s team is the lone program competing out of state this week as they play at Corban on Thursday and at Northwest Christian on Saturday.  They will return home next week for matches against College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon.

Volleyball
Evergreen volleyball returns to CRC Gymnasium this weekend with a pair of powerhouse programs coming to town.  On Friday, the Geoducks host 10th-ranked Eastern Oregon and it is the annual Breast Cancer Awareness match with fans invited to trade in their green and white for pink. Saturday night brings College of Idaho to town and it will be Trivia Night at the CRC so come show off your knowledge of useless facts either about the athletes or the world.  Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.

Eagles Blank Geoducks, 2-0, in CCC Opener

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Playing under ideal skies, the Evergreen Geoducks did not earn an ideal result, falling to the Northwest Eagles, 2-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at NU Soccer Field in Kirkland, Wash.

The Eagles (5-5-0, 1-0-0 CCC) got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute as Annie-Bryn Stauffer unleashed a left-footed missile from 20 yards out that snuck into the upper left corner and past Geoduck (1-5-0, 0-1-0 CCC) keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC).

Northwest doubled the advantage in the 74th minute as Tiffany Taylor fed in a ball to Acaia Johnson, who dribbled up the right side and shot across the goal into the lower left for the score and 2-0 lead.

Despite allowing the two goals, MacKenzie was strong in net, making seven saves on 17 total shots by NU.  Northwest’s Patty Hughes also made seven saves as every Evergreen shot was on target, though none could sneak past the Eagle keeper.

The Geoducks remain on the road next week as they travel to Corban on Thursday.  First kick with the Warriors is set for 4 p.m. in Salem, Ore.

Yotes Nip Geoducks, 2-1

CALDWELL, Idaho – After conceding an early goal, the Evergreen Geoducks couldn’t mount a comeback, falling to the College of Idaho Yotes, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Yotes (2-8-0, 2-4-0 CCC) got on the board in just the seventh minute as Yan Gioseffi sent a free kick into the box and Jorge Brambila took control of the ball, firing it in from the top of the six-yard box for the 1-0 lead.

College of Idaho made it 2-0 in the 64th minute as Gioseffi again took advantage of a free kick, firing it into the right corner from just outside the box as the Geoducks (4-4-2, 2-3-1 CCC) found themselves down by two goals.

Evergreen finished the match on a high note as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) sent in a long ball to Sebastian Lyons (Port Townsend, Wash./Port Townsend HS/Skagit Valley CC), who beat two defenders before putting it in for his first goal of the season.

The Geoducks held a slight advantage in shots, 14-13, but the Yotes held a 9-3 advantage in the second half.   Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont HS/Wenatchee Valley CC) made a pair of saves before being shown a red card in the 71st minute following a tackle.  Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) came in for the final 20 minutes, making one save.

Evergreen now has a week to rest their legs before their next match.  The Geoducks play host to in-state rival Northwest on Saturday afternoon.  First kick with the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
