Boxers Punch Past Geoducks in Overtime, 2-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – McKenna Davidson gathered the ball out of a scrum in overtime and put in the game winner in the 98th minute to give the Pacific Boxers a 2-1 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Boxers (2-0-1) got on the board in the 27th minute as Kara Lankey dribbled one-on-one with Evergreen keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) before putting the ball in an empty net from close.  The score would stay at 1-0 heading in the half as Pacific held a 10-9 lead in shots.

The Geoducks (0-2-0) found the equalizer in the 66th minute as Kori Lerch (Chester, Va./Matoaca HS) sent in a perfect corner kick to the far post and Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) got a head on the ball to put it past Pacific keeper Kayla Davidson.

Still tied after regulation, the two squads went into overtime and the Geoducks nearly got the win in the 95th minute as freshman Vanessa Zamora (Vancouver, Wash./Hudsons Bay HS) fired in a shot from 20 yards out that found the post, giving the Boxers another shot.

Pacific took advantage of the opportunity as Holly Chang-Northway sent in a corner that found the middle of a large scrum in front of the net and Davidson came out with the ball, firing it in for the game-winner.

Pacific finished with a 17-13 advantage on shots.  Despite allowing the two goals, MacKenzie was strong in net for Evergreen, making seven saves on the afternoon.

No. 24 Bears Battle Past Geoducks, 3-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – After playing to a tie in the first half, the 24th-ranked Rocky Mountain Battlin’ Bears put a pair of second half scores on the board to spoil the Evergreen Geoducks’ season opener in a women’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Olympia, Wash.

Rocky’s Therese Hagbyhn opened up the scored in just the fourth minute as she won a ball from an Evergreen defender and pushed in past Geoduck keeper Kaitlin Mackenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) for the 1-0 lead.

The Geoducks got the equalizer less than a minute later as Avery Cushmna (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande HS) fed in a ball to junior Katie Hebien (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS), who put it past Malin Johannson for the score.

In the second half, the Battlin’ Bears retook the lead in the 63rd minute as Jaelene Gygmond gathered the ball out of a group before finishing past second-half keeper Kayla Kitts (Renton, Wash./Kentridge HS/Highline CC) for the 2-1 lead.  Rocky earned an insurance goal in the 77th minute as Hagbyhn scored her second of the afternoon on a rainbow clear that just snuck under the crossbar from about 45 yards out.

Rocky outshot the Geoducks, 27-6, on the afternoon but the two Evergreen keepers had a nice day, combining for nine saves.  The Battlin’ Bears were also whistled for offsides 11 times on the afternoon, compared with just once for the Geoducks.

Geoducks Gear Up For Fall

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Having opened fall camp on Monday, the Evergreen Geoducks are working hard to get ready for the fall sports season.

The Evergreen men’s soccer team starts the 2013 season as the favorite to take second place in the Cascade Conference standings this season after earning a trip to the conference title game last season.  The Geoducks will be led by 2012 CCC Defensive Player of the Year Brady Espinoza (Pasco, Wash./Walla Walla CC) and 2012 CCC Newcomer of the Year Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS). The green and white open up the 2013 season on August 17 with a home match against Trinity Lutheran.

The Geoduck women’s soccer team was predicted ninth in the preseason conference poll and will be led by senior midfielder Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS), who earned Honorable Mention All-CCC honors as a junior.  Also returning will be senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Mackenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) after posting a 2.48 GAA with a .698 save percentage last season.  The team opens up the season on Aug. 31 when they play host to Rocky Mountain in an NAIA non-conference match.

A new era in Evergreen volleyball begins this season as Angela Spoja takes over as head coach following a successful run at Tacoma Community College. Selected 10th in the CCC coaches’ poll, the Geoducks will be led by seniors Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Trevecca Nazarene Univ.) and Brittany Covert (Chino Hills, Calif./Northern Michigan Univ.).  Watkins averaged 2.95 kills per set in 2012 while Covert put down 1.88 kills per set and secured 0.61 blocks per set as a junior.

The Geoducks will open the 2013 season on Aug. 22, taking on traditional power Carroll (Mont.) as part of the Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge in Spokane, Wash.

While not on campus yet, the Geoduck cross country program looks to rebound this season under head coach Chris Ertman.  Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS) should be the number one runner for the men’s squad while sophomore Jamie Cummins (Lopez, Wash./Lopez HS) will lead the Evergreen women.  The Geoducks are set to open the season on Sep. 7 at the Apple Ridge Run in Yakima, Wash.
