#20 Cavs Sweep Past Geoducks

PORTLAND, Ore. –The 20th-ranked Concordia Cavaliers used a number of runs to pull away from the Evergreen Geoducks as the Cavs earned the three-set sweep in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Saturday night in Portland, Ore.

The Cavaliers (18-4, 11-2 CCC) put the first five points on the board as the Geoducks (3-14, 2-10 CCC) found themselves behind from the very start.  Another seven-point run put Concordia ahead 17-4 as Evergreen simply couldn’t close the gap as they fell in set one, 25-11.

Set two was a bit more competitive as Evergreen held an early 9-8 lead but 10 straight Cavalier points put CU up, 18-9 and the Geoducks again couldn’t overcome the large deficit, falling 25-17 in set number two.

While Concordia never pulled off a large run in the third set, a number of small runs slowly but surely built a CU lead.  Throwing down a match-high 15 kills, the Cavaliers earned a 25-16 set three win to clinch the match in straight sets.

Evergreen was led by 11 kills from Victoria Love (Seaside, Calif./Seaside HS/Hartnell College).  Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt. Hood CC) put up 25 assists on 26 Evergreen kills while also recording a team-high 10 digs on the night.

Concordia was led by 11 kills from Melanie Miller and Brenna Huwe.  Lindsay Mangan added 33 assists to her totals while Leslie Hanks finished with 10 digs to lead the Cavs.  As a team, Concordia hit .360 on the night with 42 kills and 10 errors on 89 total swings.

The Geoducks return to Olympia next weekend, playing host to Oregon Tech on Friday night.  First serve with the Hustlin’ Owls is set for 7 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium.

Evergreen Dedicates Costantino Recreation Center

OLYMPIA, Wash. – As part of Return to Evergreen festivities and in honor of a tenure that lasted over 20 years, The Evergreen State College officially dedicated the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday evening in honor of retired Vice President for Student Affairs Art Costantino.

crcribboncuttingOn hand to help dedicate the building was Vice President for Finance and Administration John Hurley, current Vice President for Student Affairs Wendy Endress, Director of Recreation and Athletics Matt Newman, Assistant Athletic Director Monica Heuer and former student-athlete Jackie Robinson.

The building, which was officially renamed the Costantino Recreation Center on June 13, 2013 by the Board of Trustees, is home to Geoduck intercollegiate athletics, wellness/recreation classes, club sports, The Outdoor Program (TOP), camps, clinics and general recreation use by student, faculty and members of the community.

Costantino served as Vice President for Student Affairs from July 13, 1992 until June 30, 2013, making him the longest-serving vice president in the history of The Evergreen State College.  His tenure was marked by a record of accomplishment that has transformed the student experience at Evergreen, including the expansion of intercollegiate athletics.  Under his leaderships, Evergreen began men’s and women’s basketball in 1997 and women’s volleyball in 2001.

 

Geoducks Wrap Up Regular Season at L&C Invite

ESTACADA, Ore. – Racing for the final time before the 2013 Cascade Conference Championships, the Evergreen Geoducks went down to Oregon and took part in the Lewis & Clark Invitational on Saturday at McIver State Park in Estacada, Ore.

The Geoducks were led by Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS), who took 43rd with a time of 26:48.  Twins Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) and Wes Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) were the next across the line, taking 92nd and 97th respectively.  As a team, the Geoducks took 12th of 13 teams.

Junior Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) represented the Geoduck women, taking 150th with a time of 30:23.

Evergreen will wrap up the 2013 season on Nov. 9 when they head to Caldwell, Idaho for the 2013 CCC Championships.

Evergreen Comes Back To Knock Off Knights, 2-1

PORTLAND, Ore. – After allowing an early goal, the Evergreen Geoducks scored twice in the span on four minutes to earn the 2-1 win over the Warner Pacific Knights in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore.

The Knights (3-7-0, 2-6-0 CCC) broke through first as Almir Celebic passed in a ball to Jameson Jones, who finished from about eight yards out for the 18th-minute score.  The Geoducks (5-5-3, 3-4-2 CCC) evened it up in the 32nd minute as Alberto Brand (Seattle, Wash./University HS/Highline CC) fed in a long cross that found the head of Greg Wolfe (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS/Shoreline CC) as Wolfe knocked it in for his first goal of the year.

Evergreen took the lead just a few minutes later as Brice Boum (Douala, Cameroon/ College Cite’ Vienlle /Edmonds CC) pushed in a pass to Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS), who finished for his fifth goal of the season as the Geoducks held on the rest of the way for the 2-1 win.

Mauricio Sanchez (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont CC/Wenatchee Valley CC) made three saves in goal to collect the win.  The Geoducks held a 10-8 advantage on shots as they  earned the victory.

The Geoducks return to action next Friday when they host College of Idaho.  First kick with the Yotes is set for 3 p.m. on Evergreen pitch.

Geoducks Hold Off Yotes, 2-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A late push by the visiting College of Idaho Coyotes wasn’t enough to stop the Evergreen Geoduck from earning a 2-1 win in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (3-7-0, 2-3-0 CCC) opened up the scoring in the 31st minute as Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS)  took a pass from Delaney Smith (Dupont, Wash./Steilacoom HS/Tacoma CC) and Krauza scored her second goal of the season from about five yards out for the 1-0 lead over the Yotes (3-10-0, 1-5-0 CCC).

Evergreen made it 2-0 in the 81st minute as Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) fed in a pass through the last line of Yote defenders to the feet of Jasmine Berlin (Portland, Ore./Reynolds HS), who went one-on-one with C of I keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph before scoring her first goal of the season.

College of Idaho answered back just over 30 seconds later as Summer Jackson scored her second goal of the year, assisted by Camas Curran, on an opportunity from about eight yards out but the Geoduck defense stayed tight the rest of the way en route to the 2-1 win.

Kyla Kitts (Renton, Wash./Kentridge HS/Highline CC) was strong in net for the Geoducks, making four saves to collect the win.  Holmes-Joseph also made four saves, allowing the two goals to take the loss.

Evergreen hits the road next week, traveling to second-ranked Concordia on Thursday.  First kick with the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
