This week, Natasha and I made Three Sisters Soup, rice, bread, and Market Spice Tea. You can find the details of the meal in this post on our program website. It was nice to get back into the swing of class so early on the first day, and cooking with a friend is always fantastic. The meal was delicious and filling, and it felt good to share such healthy and joyfully crafted food with our class.

In making the dish, I was reminded of the fact, as discussed in Vandana Shiva’s Who Really Feeds the World?, that Three Sisters Soup tastes so good because the foods involved (corn, beans, and squash) are grown together in a self-sustaining mini-ecosystem. Foods grown together that share nutrients will often have flavor cohesion as a result. Although we couldn’t source our ingredients from the same place for perfect harmony, it was clear from the taste that they work well together.
