Editor’s Note:
Amazing to say, but the whole Evergreen campus community is reading the same book this year. It’s part of a new, faculty-led project called the Academic Statement Initiative. Each summer, new students will be sent, and asked to read, a selected book before they arrive on campus. During orientation week, students and faculty will meet in seminar groups all over campus to explore the selected text. This program will provide students – future alumni – a common cultural reference point, a learning experience they will all share, albeit in myriad ways. Read farther to learn how you can participate.
An invitation from Tyrus Smith MES ’97, Executive Director of the Tacoma Program:
The Evergreen State College Tacoma Program is proud to host an Evergreen Traveling Seminar in which participants will discuss Ms. Carlotta Walls LaNier’s book A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock High School. This will be an exciting opportunity to engage in a seminar discussion about a very important era in United States history, and the lessons we can learn from it. I invite all those who are interested to attend this seminar and share your take on Carlotta’s story. Through her eyes, we can gain a greater appreciation of just how far we have come as a nation and how far we have to go to achieve equality and excellence in education.
