About the Program:

Pierce College’s CIS department offers professional/technical degrees and certificates that
prepare graduates to enter the workforce in areas such as junior database administrator,
database developer, business analyst, data analyst network engineer, and junior computer
programmer/web developer. Students take classes leading to one-year certificates and/or
two-year professional/technical degrees. Students who are interested in pursuing a bachelor’s
degree may transfer with their first two years completed at Pierce College to Central
Washington University, Western Governors University and others. Classes in our department
are also in demand by current industry professionals who seek to upgrade their skills and
remain relevant in their fields.

Courses taught through our Computer Information Systems Department support three
associate’s degree programs: Database Management and Design, and Health Informatics and
Integrated Technology, and Computer Network Engineering. Faculty teach and assess
individual course outcomes, as well as program outcomes, for these degrees. In addition, CIS
supports the Computer Science degree by offering two Computer Science programming
courses designed for transfer students. Faculty teach and assess individual course outcomes,
as well as program outcomes, for these degrees. Faculty also teach the district’s five Core
Abilities: Critical, Creative, and Reflective Thinking, Responsibility, Information Competency,
Effective Communication and Multiculturalism.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The successful candidate will have a forward-looking perspective and teach Information Technology, Database and Software Development, Health Informatics and Integrated Technology, and Computer Science courses at a variety of levels in lecture (whiteboard design, live coding), lab (hands on work with students), and/or hybrid settings. Courses may be taught at any of our campuses, depending on need.

Primary teaching responsibilities may include:
SQL Server Database design, development, programming, and administration fundamentals;
Business and Systems Analysis with Agile development methods. Debugging and software maintenance and others as technology evolves;
Introductory to intermediate programming and scripting in a variety of languages (including, but not limited to: C#, SQL, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Java, Python, andPowerShell);
Full stack web development using modern frameworks (i.e. ASP.NET MVC) Mobile application development.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
Engaging in curriculum and program development incorporating current educational theories and research;
Analyzing course assessments, evaluations, and data and engaging in continuous improvement of courses based on that analysis in order to advance student achievement of outcomes, success in subsequent courses, and impact on retention and graduation;
Demonstrating multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and creating an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion;
Working within a collaborative and innovative department;
Engaging in district wide efforts to improve student retention and success, specifically through intentional efforts to eliminate equity gaps;
Incorporating active student learning and appropriate use of technology in the classroom;
Continuously innovating learning experiences (campus, online, hybrid) in response to assessment and evidence/data analysis;
Tailoring curriculum to engage marginalized and oppressed groups;
Utilizing active and inclusive pedagogy;
Creatively designing learning experiences that extend beyond delivering content and assist students in achieving course, program, and degree outcomes, including the college’s five core abilities of Multiculturalism, Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking, Information Competency, Responsibility, and Effective Communication;
Teaching, advising, and mentoring students holistically from recruitment to completion;
Engaging in shared governance;
Participating in the First Year Faculty Cohort in the first year of the tenure process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field with significant collegiate-level information technology coursework, and appropriate industry experience and certification(s) pertaining to enterprise level database development and administration and/or enterprise-level computer programming/applications development/systems development using current industry standard development techniques, systems, and languages.
Must be eligible for Washington State professional/technical certification (a basic overview can be found here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=131-16-094; while not essential for the position, a Master’s degree may satisfy certification requirements in some areas).

Terms of Employment:

This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 173 contracted days per year with the tenure process starting in September 2019, and with the opportunity to start working an earlier quarter. Assignment may include district discipline/program coordination, as well as evening, hybrid, and/or online teaching. This is a District position with a “home” campus assignment. Initial placement of this position will be at the Puyallup campus. Candidates will be working for a District Dean and will be required to attend district meetings as well as collaborate with colleagues across the district and across departments.

Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon education and experience. Salary placement for newly hired full-time faculty will be at one of five levels based upon qualifications including teaching experience and credentials. The five levels range from $57,380 to $59,675 per 173-day academic year. Opportunities for summer employment and other assignments are in addition to the base salary.
