Meeting Minutes 11-16-11

ATM Locations

Kesly and Chelsea met with John Hurley about the ATM locations. John is in agreement with the switch because of the cost. At this point John has not reviewed the contracts and said the next step to take is to write an official statement. Nate wrote and read a statement he wrote. Nate motioned to pass, Willy seconds. Motion Passed.

Meeting Minutes 11-9-11

Public Comment:

Chase is a returning student to Evergreen and came in and expressed his concerns for the mandatory workshops (Diversity Workshop and Drug and Alcohol Workshop) for the incoming freshman and transfer students each year. Chase expressed that he doesn’t believe that it should be mandatory because he believes that students should have the choice to attend these workshops.

Meeting Minutes 10-26-11

Public Comment:

Andrew Hunter came to the GSU to ask for their support. He is trying to work out issues having to do with class credit and aid money relating to independent contracts he did last spring. He had some complications with his contract due to an unrelated attack against him in Hollywood that he was forced to deal with.

New Code of Conduct Statement

The Geoduck Student Union supports the right of students to the education they have already paid for. The current draft of the code allows the college to revoke a degree with a ‘more likely than not’ standard of proof. This is unacceptable. The GSU takes the issue of academic integrity seriously but the possibility of a degree being revoked under that standard is too great. If we as an institution are willing to revoke a graduate’s degree, we should be absolutely certain that we are in the right to do so.

GSU Supports Involvement of Evergreen Community in Occupy Olympia Movement

The GSU at The Evergreen State College supports the involvement of Evergreen students, staff, and faculty members in the Occupy Olympia movement.
Specifically, we stand in solidarity with Scott Olsen, the Iraq War veteran injured in Oakland, in support of loan relief for college graduates in support of increased accessed to public colleges in support of a more progressive tax structure, and in support of civil disobedience to achieve these ends.

Meeting Minutes 10-19-11

Public Comment:

Justin McMahon proposed New Approach Washington. New Approach Washington is a non profit organization that is trying to legalize marijuana in Washington state. Marijuana would be treated like liquor, someone needs to be the age of 21 to buy and it would be taxed. Marijuana would still be illegal on a federal level but legal on a state level.

Meeting Minutes 10-12-11

Student Conduct Code:

Art Costantino, Student member on DTF  – Ray, Grievance Officer Andrea Seabert-Olsen, and Wendy Endress came in to discuss the Student Conduct Code.  They have been working on it for 2-3 years and are trying to approve it for affect in January.  Members of the GSU voiced their concerns about how the section about degree revocation should be more specific and the standard of proof for degree revocation should be higher.  Concerns were received and they will discuss where to go from here.
