OLYMPIA, Wash. – After building up a three-goal lead, the Evergreen Geoducks held off a late charge by the Oregon Tech Owls to earn a 3-2 win in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Olympia, Wash.
The Geoducks (4-7-1, 3-5-1 CCC) opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute after Kevin Flavin dialed long distance, putting it past Oregon Tech (4-9-0, 2-7-0 CCC) keeper Loren Jessen from about 35 yards out for the 1-0 lead. Evergreen made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute when Jeremy Novack (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest HS) fed in a ball to George Bundy (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw HS).
The lead became three goals for Evergreen in the 80th minute when Bundy fired a shot off the cross bar and Brandon Wood (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho/North Idaho College) headed it in for the goal, his second of the season. The Owls finally got on the board in the 89th minute on a goal by Ashton Betts and once again in the 90th minute by Dustin Hirata, who bent in a corner kick for the score, but it was too little too late as Evergreen earned the 3-2 win.
Both teams finished the match with 13 shots on the day while OIT held an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. Evergreen keeper Christian Pettit (Sprint Branch, Texas/UT-San Antonio) made six saves to collect the win while Jessen made just one stop for the Owls.
Evergreen wraps up their four-match home stand on Wednesday afternoon when they host Corban. Oregon Tech will also be in action on Wednesday, hosting Warner Pacific in Klamath Falls, Ore.
