Region 3 Ecological Services has vacancy announcements open for two term and
one temp position as Avian Radar System (ARS) operators.  The positions are
based in the Regional Office, Bloomington, MN.  However, these are field
positions and most of the time the incumbents will be working at field sites
located at various points around the Great Lakes.   The positions involve
helping to document bird and bat migration corridors along portions of the
Great Lakes coastline.  Duties will include operating and transporting one
of two ARS shown below, conducing visual bird observations,
acoustic/ultrasonic monitoring, and possibly mist netting. Term positions
will also be involved in data analysis from the ARS and acoustic monitoring.

Incumbents will be at field locations during spring and fall migration (up
to four months each) and possibly during some summer periods.  Weather
conditions can be adverse.  The positions have physical requirements as
shown below and a medical exam and physical capabilities test will be
required before applicants are hired.

Condition of employment:  The position requires moderate physical ability
and strength.  The incumbent will be required to work at avian radar units
powered by diesel generators and that are located in open areas, such as
agricultural fields, without paved road access.  In adverse weather
conditions (e.g. deep snow, wet ground, mud) that prevent vehicle access to
the radar unit, the incumbent will need to manually transport the diesel
fuel for the generators and lift and pour it into the fuel tank.  This could
require carrying 7 gallons (50 pounds) up to a half mile.  The position also
requires the ability to climb up to the base of the radar antennas for
mobilization, deployment, and trouble shooting and onto other portions of
the avian radar system for maintenance and trouble shooting.  It requires
frequent entry and exit of 4 X 4 pickups with higher than normal ground
clearance and getting into and out of the beds of such pickups.   Incumbent
will be required to walk through other habitat such as woods and marshes to
place and service acoustic monitors and to observe birds.  Applicants
tentatively selected for these positions will be required to successfully
pass a medical examination and a physical capability test.
