• This position is part of a collaborative effort among the USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) and intermountain West Joint Venture (IWJV) and the Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife (ODFW) and is located in Baker City.
• This is a full time, Limited Duration position through JUNE 30, 2013.
• This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people to fill the current vacancy and
may be used to fill other vacancies as they occur.
• The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Natural Resource Specialist 2
(NRS) level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications
for the Natural Resource Specialist 1 ($2,816-$4,089/mo) to apply, as we may

• The employee in this position will be represented by the Service Employees International Union
(SEIU) and will be subject to all terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Range and Wildlife Conservationist will provide rangeland, biological/wildlife technical assistance
for the Sage Grouse Initiative and associated Farm Bill conservation programs to agriculture
producers and landowners. S/he will be an ODFW employee with daily instruction and leadership
provided by an NRCS Designated Conservationist. Major roles and responsibilities are to:
• Provide technical assistance (wildlife biology and range conservation focus) and guidance to
landowners, government agencies, non-government organizations (NGO’s) and others.
• Coordinate the implementation and application of biological sciences within the conservation
programs in cooperation with the local NRCS District Conservationist and others.
• Complete contracts, applications and other required documentation for Farm Bill conservation
programs requiring biological and rangeland science expertise in cooperation with the partners.
• Communicate program requirements, complete site visits to determine eligibility and develop
contracts/plans for applicants enrolling in USDA conservation programs or other state and local
conservation programs for the protection, restoration and enhancement of sage grouse habitat.
• Coordinate and participate in field work activities for sage grouse habitat project implementation
and work with agricultural producers.
Working Conditions
• Must be able to work and drive in remote locations on adverse terrain, sometimes in inclement
weather.
• Requires travel by air, foot and vehicle.
• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but
not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a
daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess
of eight hours.
NOTE: You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-ofstate
finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.
NOTE: Within three-days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department of

QUALIFICATIONS & DESIRED ATTRIBUTES:
Minimum Qualifications:
Natural Resource Specialist 2 option:
• Two years of biological or hydrological experience performing studies, research, or resource
management activities in a fish, wildlife, or stream geomorphology/hydrology program that included
one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Geomorphology or closely-related Bachelor’s degree, or
Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30
semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of biological or
hydrological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish,
wildlife, or stream geomorphology/hydrology program; OR
• One year of biological or hydrological experience performing studies, research, or resource
management activities in a fish, wildlife, or stream geomorphology/hydrology program that included
at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master’s
degree in Geology, Hydrology, Geomorphology or closely-related Master’s degree, or Fisheries or
Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR
• A Doctorate degree in Geology, Hydrology, Geomorphology or closely-related Doctorate, or
Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.
Applicants who have obtained a Master’s degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an
internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to
receive credit for the work experience. The Master’s degree/Doctorate and applicable work
experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may
count toward minimum qualifications.
Natural Resource Specialist 1 option-underfill:
• A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at
least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR
• Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management
activities in a fish or wildlife program.
