The Alaska SeaLife Center, a non-profit organization generating and sharing scientific knowledge that promotes understanding and stewardship of Alaska marine ecosystems, is seeking applications for the a Education Specialist.

This position is responsible for designing and presenting education programs for schools and public audiences. Variable hours, including mornings, evenings and weekends as needed. May include national and statewide travel for professional development and urban/rural outreach.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor?s degree in a field complementary to the Center?s mission, two years experience in a similar setting or the equivalent.
Experience in curriculum writing and development, understanding of state/national standards and program coordination is preferred.

The specific skills and abilities of the employee in this position and the needs of the department will dictate which of the primary responsibilities the employee performs.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

? Develops and presents educational programs with a focus on current marine research in Alaska, to scheduled on-site or off-site school groups and other audiences. Delivery methods may also include distance learning by videoconference.

? Designs and publishes teacher guides adherent to state and
national   science standards for education programs that include
classroom activities   for student interactivity.

? Works with exhibits staff and other ASLC staff to construct props and other teaching materials to supplement education programs.

? This Education position may also work with Exhibits, Interpretation, or Science staff to complete projects that fulfill the ASLC?s
institutional   and educational goals.

? Participates in conversations about current best practices in
informal   science education and identifies models for successful
programs.

? Identifies necessary equipment and supplies, coordinates
procurements   and maintains the education supply inventory.      ?
Assists with marketing by identifying new markets and opportunities
for education programs.

? May train and coordinate scheduling of part-time Education
Specialists, interns, and volunteers.

? May coordinate an Education program, such as Outreach, In-House
Programs, or Distance Learning.

? Maintains an effective working relationship with staff. Must be
able   to work both independently and as a team member, while handling
multiple   priorities in an efficient manner.

? Represents the ASLC by presenting programs and resources at off-
site   special events, such as festivals, conferences, fundraising
events, and   teacher training days.
