Assistant Restoration Technician; Garry Oaks Ecosystems; Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve, Duncan, B.C.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has a full time contract position
available starting mid-September 2011 and running until March 31, 2012 at
the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve. The contractor will be assisting preserve
manager Irvin Banman in carrying out the management objectives at the
Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve, Mt Tzouhalem Ecological Reserve, Somenos Garry
Oak Protected Area and the NCC Chase Woods Property. The contract pays
$15/hr, is 8 hrs/day, 5 days a week, Monday to Friday (with an occasional
weekend day as required).
Job description
-invasive species removal
-nursery work, native species propagation, weeding, transplanting, soil
mixing and seed collection
-assistance with research plots involving fire, sheep grazing, deer and
rabbit fencing, planting, and monitoring
-some working with power tools and machines (ATV, saws)
-assisting and guiding volunteers at community volunteer events
-general tasks such as mowing, fence repair, building, trapping invasive
fauna (eastern grey squirrels)
Applicant prerequisites
-must be very physically fit
-have some knowledge of ecosystems function and species interactions (Garry
Oak ecosystems)
-experience with nursery work/gardening, native plant identification
abilities an asset
-passion for outdoors and safe work habits, all work happens outside, in all
weather conditions, sometimes on rugged terrain
-good communication skills and an enthusiasm for working with people
(community/schools volunteer events and tours)
-dedication to caring for an endangered ecosystem
-mechanical aptitude an asset as well as some basic carpentry
-live in or relocate to the Duncan area and supply own transportation to the
work site (the contract does not cover travel costs). BC Transit bus service
is available from Duncan.
