This is a term-employment position for one year, through the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation with possible extensions as funding allows. The Fisheries Education Specialist primary duties are to work with sanctuary staff and their partners to administer the Voices of the Bay fisheries education and outreach program.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), the nation’s largest marine protected area, encompasses more than 6,094 square miles of central California coastal waters that contain a rich array of habitats and marine life. The Sanctuary program provides protection of these natural resources through research and education to foster public understanding and stewardship of this nationally significant marine area. The Sanctuary works closely with the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF) to facilitate many of their programs. MBSF is also actively involved in raising money for expanding the number and scope of ocean and coastal projects. One exciting collaboration is called Voices of the Bay.

The mission for Voices of the Bay is to use local fisheries, fishing communities and their rich maritime history and culture as a focal point for students to learn about the marine environment, the ecological and human dimensions of marine resource use, and its management.

_*Program Administration*_: Working with MBNMS Staff, the selected candidate will facilitate and administer all aspects of the Voices of the Bay curriculum. This includes scheduling and tracking of programs in schools and facilitating and organizing meetings with the Advisory Board; receiving and making telephone calls, contacting fisheries education partners (fishing community members) and participants and organizing Voices of the Bay program materials and; other administrative duties as assigned from time to time.

_*Fisheries Community Outreach*_: Enhance communication between fishermen, resource managers, scientists, environmentalists and the public on fisheries related education. Involve fishermen in the development of fisheries education programs.

_*Professional Development Training*_: Work with teachers in the Monterey Bay area to implement the Voices of the Bay and Fishermen in the Classroom curriculum at their schools and/or organization and hold one-day teacher enrichments.

 

*Work Hours and Compensation:*

The position will have access to a work desk, computer, phone, copier and facsimile machine in Santa Cruz, CA. No paid leave and health benefits are offered with this position. It is expected that it will take up to 20 hours/week, 80 hours/month for 12 months. A competitive compensation package is available and is commensurate with experience.

Pre-approved expenses such as travel and other job-related expenses are reimbursable.

The Fishermen in Classroom program brings fishermen into the classroom to provide students with an opportunity to meet the men and women who make a living off the sea. Job duties and requirements are very similar to the requirements for the Voices of the Bay program and will be outlined in more detail during the interview process.
