Overview:  This position is part of Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever’s Farm Bill Biologist program which began in 2003 with 4 positions and currently consists of 75 Partnership Biologists in 15 states.  This position provides biological/wildlife technical assistance for Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), USDA, and Pheasants Forever  conservation programs to agriculture producers and landowners.  This position will be an employee of, and be supervised by Pheasants Forever, Inc., with daily instruction and leadership provided by IDFG and other local partners.  Funding is provided by IDFG, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Intermountain West Joint Venture.  Other local partnerships include USDA –Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Farm Service Agency (FSA). The location of this position is flexible, being based either in Idaho Falls or Pocatello, however the position will spend a large amount of time working out of local NRCS field offices in this area of the state.

 

Duties:

Provide technical assistance (wildlife biology focus) and guidance to landowners, government agencies, non-government organizations and others. Training will be provided by IDFG, NRCS, PF, and other local and state agencies.

Coordinate the implementation and application of biological sciences within the conservation programs in cooperation with the local NRCS District Conservationist, IDFG Private Lands Biologist, PF staff, and others.

Complete contracts, applications and other required documentation for conservation programs (i.e. CRP, SAFE, WRP, WHIP) requiring biological expertise in cooperation with the listed partners.

Communicate program requirements, complete site visits to determine eligibility, and develop contracts/plans for applicants enrolling in USDA conservation programs or other state and local conservation programs.

Coordinate and participate in field work activities for habitat project implementation for the Mule Deer Initiative and work with private landowners.

Participate in SE Idaho IDFG mule deer management and research activities.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with landowners and partner agencies.

Ability to work independently with little supervision and with diverse clientele.

Knowledge of wildlife ecology, wetland and grassland management, and range management, including the ability to utilize various habitat management tools in the development of habitat management plans.

Knowledge of conservation and wildlife programs provided by Federal (i.e. Farm Bill, US Fish and Wildlife Service), State and PF.  In addition, knowledge of how these programs are implemented in an agricultural landscape.

Excellent verbal/written communication and organizational skills.

Valid driver’s license required, a IDFG vehicle is provided for work activities, some use of personal vehicle required (mileage reimbursement provided).

Able to obtain USDA Clearance and NRCS Conservation Planner 1 and USDA Technical Service Provider certifications within 1 year of obtaining position. 

 

Training and Experience Guideline: Any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the applicant to possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  A general qualification guideline for this position is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Management or closely related natural resources field and/or related field experience.

 

Starting Salary: $29,000 – $33,500+ Health and Retirement Benefits.
