The Audubon Society of Portland, a leading voice in conservation for over a century, is seeking to hire a Backyard Habitat Technician for our Backyard Habitat Certification Program (BHCP). The Backyard Habitat Technician is an integral team member of the Conservation Department. The Conservation Program promotes protection of wildlife and wildlife habitat at the local, state and national levels through a wide range of activities including public policy, environmental litigation, advocacy, public outreach, community-based science and wildlife rehabilitation initiatives. The Backyard Habitat Technician will focus on promoting stewardship of urban wildlife populations at the backyard and neighborhood level, as part of the BHCP.

The Backyard Habitat Certification Program is a collaborative effort between Audubon and the Columbia Land Trust. The Program provides technical assistance to small lot, private property owners to restore native wildlife habitat. The objective of the program is to move properties through three levels of advanced habitat restoration certification. The Program focuses on the removal of aggressive weeds, naturescaping and planting with native plants, stormwater management and wildlife stewardship.

The Habitat Certification Technician will be primarily responsible for meeting with property owners to provide site assessment, recommendations and evaluation for certification. Secondarily, the Technician will be responsible for limited office tasks including; data entry, phone-based outreach, and other administrative tasks as assigned. We are looking for someone that is self-motivated, highly-organized, with strong knowledge of Pacific Northwest flora and fauna, excellent customer service skills and a positive attitude.

Classification: Temporary Part-Time, non-exempt
Duration: Minimum 6 months, depending on funding thereafter
Accountability: Reports to the Conservation Program Assistant
Compensation: $15/ hour (Capped at $6,500 in FY10-11)
Hours: Flexible, up to 20 hours per week
