Position: Non-permanent Fish and Wildlife Scientific Technician 1, 2, and 3 (15 positions)

Duration:  March 1, 2012 through approximately June 30, 2012

Salary: $2113 to $3041 monthly

Duty Station Location:  Pasco Field Office, 2620 N. Commercial Ave, Pasco, WA.

There are currently eight (8) four-month non-permanent Scientific Technician 2 positions, six (6) four-month non-permanent Scientific Technician 1 positions, and one (1)  six-month non-permanent Scientific Technician 3 position with the Fish Program, located at the Region 3 Field Office, in Pasco, Washington, Franklin County.

 

Responsibilities:

Successful applicant will conduct field sampling related to the evaluation of fluctuating river conditions on the survival of emergent and rearing juvenile fall Chinook in the Hanford Reach area of the Columbia River.  Staff is responsible for ensuring all sampling is conducted following standardized field sampling protocols and will review all data collected while in the field for completeness and accuracy. Employees are responsible for maintenance of all equipment and vehicles assigned to this Project and must follow all applicable safety practices in transit and while in the field.  Work includes the operation of 19ft boats to and from the sampling locations, use of GPS units is necessary for navigation to sampling locations.  Field sampling includes beach seining and electrofishing for collection of juvenile fish.

 

Working Conditions:

Work schedule is 40 hours per week and typically working weekends and holidays. Scheduling will include early mornings, late evenings, and weekends with varying shifts from day to day and week to week. The ability to walk up to 5 miles of river per day with light to moderately heavy equipment is necessary.  Work will often occur during inclement weather and water conditions.  Applicant should have excellent interpersonal communication skills and be able to work as a team.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Scientific Technician 1 – Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science. A valid Washington State or other state’s driver’s license is required.

Scientific Technician 2 – Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1 OR Graduation from high school or GED including one year of school science AND two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

Scientific Technician 3

Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, AND

Four years of experience as a Scientific Technician.  OR

Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND

Four years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

*College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes. A valid Washington State or other state’s driver’s license is required.

 

Desired Qualifications:

Previous experience field sampling juvenile or adult salmon. Ability to communicate clearly and work well with others as a team and/or team leader.  Ability to operate GPS equipment and work with GIS systems.  Prior experience with juvenile salmon; ability to identify adult and juvenile salmonids and resident fish species, knowledge of salmonid life histories, experience with field collection methods including beach seining and back-pack electrofishing. Knowledge of salmonid populations in the mid Columbia Basin, specifically the Hanford Reach; and knowledge of hydropower operations in the Columbia River.
