Forest Dynamics Research in the Pacific Northwest; Summer 2012 Field Crew

DESCRIPTION: The 3-person field crew will collect data on forest vegetation in young, mature and oldgrowth

forests in the mountains of western Oregon and western Washington. The research is part of a

long-term study of forest dynamics. Duties include collecting forest inventory data and assessing causes

of tree mortality. Crew positions are best suited for upper-level undergraduates or recent graduates

who are interested in forest ecology research.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Field experience in forest inventory methods and instruments.

2. Skilled in identifying woody plant species of the Pacific Northwest.

3. Knowledge of tree mortality agents (diseases, insects, disturbance).

4. Experience using handheld data recorders.

5. Skilled in off-trail navigation (map reading, compass orienteering, GPS use).

6. Ability to work long hours in very rugged terrain.

7. Ability to work and live cooperatively with others.

8. Organized and self-motivated. Attentive to detail. Legible handwriting.

LOGISTICS

_ For most of the summer the field crew will be based at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest

near Blue River, Oregon (http://andrewsforest.oregonstate.edu/). We will also travel to

research sites in Washington.

_ Housing with basic amenities provided at HJA. Elsewhere camping will be necessary.

_ Work weeks consist of four, 10-hour days.

_ Job hazards include steep terrain, brushy understory vegetation, downed logs and insects.

DURATION: June 18 to September 7, 2012

SALARY: $12 – $14 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
